Solved Windows 7 won't install

Nothing necessarily appears on the screen, really. When it gets to expanding files, it hangs at 0%. No, really-- it just hangs there. I downloaded Windows 7 from Digital River- I didn't really get it on a disk.

Now we are getting someplace, When you downloaded the .iso, did you make the DVD for windows 7?

Does the dvd appear to be booting properly, what comes up first?

The Expanding files sometimes takes a while. Did you go thru the routine of deleting the existing partitions on your hard disk completely and then selecting the install where windows 7 creates a small partition and then the basic C partition.??????

I have dos 6.22, wfwg 3.11, win98, 2000 and xp VHD's available for testing. MS's Virtual PC works great.
I did make the DVD. Setup comes up correctly. I did go through the routine of deleting existing partitions on the hard disk.
I know that expanding files can take a while. I've left it to expand files twice for over an hour and it just stayed at 0%.

Since I'm trying to upgrade anyway, is there another way to upgrade?

If you have all your files backed up, you can do a custom install from inside your current OS. Insert the USB/Disc, and run Setup.exe from the autoplay window. (If it doesn't come up, Go to Start-Computer-Whatever Your W7 Device Is) and open it. Click setup.exe. Then, when it asks you do you want to upgrade or custom install. Select custom.

How old was the Hard Drive? It must of been ancient, as I just installed 7 on an XP PC with a hard drive from '03.

The question of the legal COA was never answered. I don't think a drive really "cares" what OS in has on it, they are dumb that way. :sarc:

The hard drive wasn't old, in fact, I don't know how old it was anyway. All I know is that "system requirements" only went up to Windows Vista and didn't have support for Windows 7.

That's because it was made before w7 was relaesed. I have w7 on a HDD that had XP on it, from 2004. You assertion your drive wasn't compatible makes no sense. It however, may have been bad.

The bad hard drive thing may be true. I don't know if it is though... but how does that not make sense? Well... I think it does... I mean- if that doesn't make sense, then what does?

Take those "System Requirements" you see associated with products with a grain of salt. A rather big grain when it comes to computer hardware.

The "System Requirements" listed for hard drives might be better stated as something like: "Requires installation into a device equipped with SATA data and SATA power connectors". Might need a bit more info as I imagine there are some devices out there that use hard drives yet have no facility to initialize, partition, etc. w7 can deal with hard drives, whether they are bare or not.

Now if it said something like "Requires 2 AA alkaline batteries (not included)".... :)
