I dropped my laptop last night. It wasn't a hard drop.. And yet, windows 7 refuses to start.
I have a sony vaio. Whenever I run the quick web access without starting windows 7 it works.. And the vaio assist works too but not windows.
It gives me two choices. Either to start windows normally, which doesn't work.. Just goes to a black screen or to scan for errors and repair.. I left it for seven hours to repair but it didn't do anything. I also tried restore.. It says restore is successful but then when it restarts, it doesn't work either.
I have access to the terminal. It says X:\\windows\system32 if im not mistaken.
What do I do?

Hi.

The drop seems to loose\damage a hardware.

Loose\removed hard disk etc.If you are advanced with this, check the ram and the hard disk if they are tight in slots.Or ask from a friend to do this.

Sometimes in laptops after a drop the cpu\cooler loose,so its better do not use your laptop for the moment.

If you have a Warranty is good idea to use it.

what do you mean by saying "repair"? You mean startup repair option? What kind of restore did you try?
"Either to start windows normally, which doesn't work.. Just goes to a black screen or to scan for errors and repair" => what kind of scan? do you mean chkdsk, so check for disk errors?

"I also tried restore.. It says restore is successful but then when it restarts, it doesn't work either."=>what kind of restore? Restore from manufacter recovery partition and selected "restore to factory defaults" (or something similar)?

what two options do you have when trying to boot your machine?

I adviced do not use the laptop for the moment, because if the cpu cooler is loose after the drop it may damage\burn the cpu.

IMO Its not a good idea to use a laptop after a drop.

Is better first to check well all the hardware then turn on the laptop.

Of course he must first check cooler, thanx for saying that.
After that enter the strange X:\windows\system32 black terminal screen. I hope you can enter commands there.

diskpart
list disks (I assume you only have 1, please tell me)
select disk 0
list partition (how many primary partitions do you have? Note their partition number)
select partition 1 (enter the correct partiton number)
detail partition

show me the details of all primary partitions. For example (in Dutch):
Code:
DISKPART> detail partition
Partitie 1
Type : 07
Verborgen: Nee
Actief : Ja
Offset in bytes: 32768
Volume ### Ltr Label FS Type Grootte Status Info
  ---------- --- ----------- ----- ---------- ------- --------- --------
* volume 2 C System NTFS partitie 113 GB In orde Systeem
DISKPART>
Now you can exit diskpart by typing: EXIT

First of all I'd like to thank you guys for your help and responses!
I just wanna point out that the laptop isn't giving me the choice anymore.. Whenever I turn it on it just tries to start windows normally and then fails to do so. So I can't access the terminal.. Is there a way? A button or a shortcut I can press?
By repair I meant the windows autorepair/scan.. Windows was trying to scan the computer to see if it can find errors and repair them at startup, but it never came to a conclusion.
And by restore I meant windows restore that restores your computer to an eralier point without damaging your files.
P.S: I'm on my laptop right now using the web access without starting windows seven and that works fine.
Also on my vaio there's an option to scan hard disks.. Should i do it?

what happens exactly when you start windows normally? what screens do you see and what errors?

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/666-advanced-boot-options.html
so boot into recovery environment by pressing F8 on boot. then "repair your computer". Does it list your windows installation? select that and enter "command prompt".

DIR C: or DIR D:
does it list your system disk? drive letters are sometimes not the same as in running windows! Assume C is windows disk

chkdsk/f c:
chkdsk/f d:

any failures?are they fixed?

By repair I meant the windows autorepair/scan.. Windows was trying to scan the computer to see if it can find errors and repair them at startup, but it never came to a conclusion.

=>Was it busy with a lot of disk activity (check your disk light is flashing)

Ok so I pressed F8 like you said and i went into the command prompt.
for c it says not found and it's still scanning d.. been stuck at 40% for like 40 minutes now.. is that normal?
And when i start windows normally most of the time i get prompted to go into the repair or start normally. If i start normally it goes to the starting windows screen but then nothing happens.. I just get a black screen. It doesn't go to the point to ask me to type my password. However to get to the command prompt it asked for my password.

in that command prompt:
diskpart
sel disk 0
list part (how many primary partitions do you see? Note the numbers of primary partitions)
sel part 1
detail partition
sel part 2
detail partition
sel part 3
detail partition

I only want the details of PRIMARY partitions. something like this (in Dutch)
Code:
DISKPART> det part
Partitie 1
Type : 07
Verborgen: Nee
Actief : Ja
Offset in bytes: 32768
Volume ### Ltr Label FS Type Grootte Status Info
  ---------- --- ----------- ----- ---------- ------- --------- --------
* volume 2 C System NTFS partitie 113 GB In orde Systeem
post the output in form like:
partition 1 Letter C label system,NTFS, healthy, type 07, hidden no, inactive

Most important: What is the drive letter of active partition?

Is D your windows partition? Did you do DIR D:\ and did you see windows en users folders?

40 minutes at 40% is very strange! Much disk activity? You may cancel if you wish. post a screenshot (make photo by camera) if possible
