Windows 7 X64 (64-bit) driver for Microtek ScanMaker Scanners

There is a thread here - http://www.sevenforums.com/drivers/70193-win-7-64-drivers-microtek-scanmaker-3840-a.html - that briefly notes using the Microtek ArtixScanDI 1210 (Win 7 64-bit) driver for a ScanMaker 3840 scanner.

Microtek does not provide 64-bit drivers for the ScanMaker series of scanners. (Evidently they expect one to replace a perfectly good, working scanner with a new model when one updates the OS. But, it seems one doesn't have to trash his ScanMaker because the ArtixScanDI 1210 (Windows 7 64-bit) driver will work with the USB ScanMaker series of scanners; at least it works with my ScanMaker 5900, as well as the previously reported 3840 -- I suspect it will work with others, too.

To flesh things out:
1. Boot up Win7.*
2. Make a new directory, say, "scanmaker" (without the quotes). Download the ArtixScanDI 1210 driver:

into the scanmaker directory and unzip the drv_swdi_v3_03_ad.exe file into that directory using winrar or some other program capable of unzipping executable archives (DO NOT DOUBLECLICK THE FILE TO INSTALL IT). Three directories (disk1, disk2, disk3) should appear in the scanmaker directory you created. Delete the drv_swdi_v3_03_ad.exe file.
3. Plug the scanner into a USB port on the computer and power up the scanner. Windows will not be able to find a driver for the scanner. Access the Windows Device Manager (click on the start icon, type "device manager" (no quotes) into the "search programs and files" slot, and click on the "device manager" box that should appear). In the device manager window click on the arrow in front of "Imaging devices", then double-click on "USB2.0 Scanner". Click on the driver tab in the window that opens. Now, you will need to click on the Install Driver (or Update Driver) button. In the next window click on "Browse my computer for driver software". Browse to the scanmaker directory that you created and check, or leave checked, the box that allows windows to access subdirectories in the scanmaker directory. Have Windows install the driver.

Well, after installing the ArtixScanDI 1210 driver I was somewhat disappointed in its performance.
1) Although I could get my Microtek 5900 to work with IrfanView, it would not work with Corel Photopaint X5.
2) Compared to the ScanWizard 5 drivers (advanced mode) this driver proved to be bare-bones, at best. It ran the scanner -- that was about it; no prescan adjustments were posssible.

Consequently, I bit the bullet and tried to install one of the 32-bit ScanWizard driver packages to see if that would work. I downloaded the sw5_6650_eu.exe package. Double-clicked on it and it self-extracted to a new directory of its own. I entered that directory and double-clicked on the setup.exe file and the software installed itself in a folder in the \Program Files (x86)\ directory. This driver works in IrfanView and in Corel Photopaint X5, and it is the standard ScanWizard software, allowing various parameters to be set for a scan.

I know this thread is kind of old, but I wanted to say that I followed these instructions and this solution works for a Microtek Scanmaker i320 in Windows 8! In fact the Scan Wizard 5 software seems to work just fine... I am kind of amazed, but since we only scan like 1 page every five or six months at work, it's just worth investing in a new scanner.
