Ok, so I have another thread for this problem but I still have the problem, thus me creating a new one. I recently upgraded the hardware in my PC and got windows 7 home premium x64. Games run smoothy, everything plays great, except for the fact that every time I try to do microsoft updates, the computer just reboots. I replaced the PSU because people told me that might help, and it did nothing. I ran a 4hr memtest86+ on my 4gigs of DDR3 1333 memory and I got no errors, but it still happens. Do I have to reinstall windows or do you think it's something wrong with the motherboard? I hope not, I mean the only thing that is wrong is the restarts on updates and it also occurs when I install random programs. I just really want to solve this problem, I've spent a ton of money and time trying to fix it :(

Have you tried testing the hard drive. I recommend HD Tune Pro Trial Version. It is free for 30-days, which will be long enough to test the hard drive.

Thanks, I'm running the Error Scan right now. Thats what I should be running right? The hard drive is a new 750gig seagate I got a few weeks ago from newegg.com. How should I interpret the results?

With HD Tune, if there is a problem it will outright tell you that there is a problem. Did the problem start before or after getting the new hard drive?

Well the old hard drive was starting to fail, that HD was running windows xp professional. The motherboard was screwed too so we decided to replace everything. The Motherboard, the cpu, the ram, the hard drive, the OS. I also replaced the intel stock heatsink since it didnt keep the CPU cool properly. Later I replaced the PSU because I thought that was causing the problems. The problems have been happing ever since installing windows 7 x64 home premium on the hard drive with all the new hardware. I honestly have no idea what it is. Graphic intense games run with no reboots or errors, It's just windows update consistantly, and random program installs/uninstalls.

Are those games mostly online games? I wondering if it is a network driver problem.

Yeah, the most graphically intense one is a MMORPG. Do you think a network driver would cause restarts on windows updates?

Possibly. Can you be more specific about what programs cause the reboots?

Well Windows Update causes the reboot everytime. As for programs, I can't remember exactly with which programs it crashed but recently when I was installing League of Legends, it crashed twice before I could install it successfully. I'm sorry, I can't remember much more than that. I updated my network driver btw. Let me try updating again but I doubt that will do it.

Edit: Nope, still restarts during update.

I got your PM. Any questions are supposed to be placed on your thread. Do not PM members for help. That said...

It sounds like it crashes while making a restore point based on what you have told me here and in your message. To try to fix this, open an elevated command prompt (type cmd in the start menu search bar, right click it, click Run as Administrator) and type SFC /SCANNOW.

SFC is the System File Checker. It will locate corrupted system files and try to repair them. If it says some files could not be fixed, run it again until it fixes everything or cannot fix anymore files. If it cannot fix everything, you will most likely have to do what many call a repair install. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html

Oh, okay, sorry I didn't know. I'm just really frustrated with this. I wanted to reinstall windows 7 because of this and when I make bios boot from disc with the windows 7 OEM Home premium dvd in, it loads the files and then strangely acts like windows 7 is going to start (with the glowing windows logo) and then just restarts. How can I reinstall if it doesn't even give me a chance to reformat and install ><? I just ran the sfc /scannow and no problems were detected. Should I do a repair install like you suggested or a full install? I really don't mind either. I just want windows to work normally again. I just have the issue of windows 7 reinstall loading on boot because it restarts..

Try doing a repair install first. The link I provided in my previous post leads to a tutorial that will explain everything to you. By doing a repair install all you files and programs will be left intact.

Okay, after doing the repair that you linked, I log back into windows and it said .net framework 4 needed to be repaired and told me to wait. I waited and the computer shut down and rebooted. So frustrating, should I do a fresh install?

I did a fresh install and everything is working fine. No crashes so far even after updating in microsoft update. I installed Avast again and I'll slowly install all my programs and keep a restore point always close. I have no idea what caused it but It definitely doesn't seem to be hardware. When in doubt, reinstall windows. I hope this probably doesn't come back. I'll let you guys know, thanks for the tips.
