I think they learned their lesson with Vista.

At some point, people do have to upgrade hardware if they want to continue running the latest versions of the operating system. Vista was a long jump from Windows XP...and there were quite a number of craptastic computers that were still limping along running XP that people attempted to upgrade to Vista. Vista was that painful stepping block that unfortunately does come about every 7-15 years.

Thankfully they realized they could make an even better OS that runs on less hardware requirements when they went to work on 7.

True...but then again most of us are not actually using the machines we tried to use when we attempted to go from XP to Vista. So, even though they streamlined things....machines have gotten so much more capable.

There is already a choice! Third-party developed applications is the alternative choice. If you are so in need to have those pretty little meaningless boxes bouncing around there you are. Microsoft has already documented that they are not going to add such a useless item to the UI. They are trying to make so you never have to think about defragmentation.

I like to think about my system tasks. It's the kind of user that I am. Currently using Auslogic's solution but not just for the colorful boxes even though they are fantastic.

I use theirs, too. I've read it's better than the built in defrag...but I don't know for sure.

It certainly seems to be. Subjectively the system feels swifter after using it.
I think SmartDefrag is even better. That's free and has a space optimization thingy.
I've been using Raxco Perfect Disk for a couple of years and I really endorse that but it's paid for software.

I set the Auslogics to put the files at the beginning of the disk and they too have an optimize option that I run once a week.

I know this is off topic but I have a Sunday ritual. Run CCleaner. Run SuperAntispyware full scan. Run Malwarebytes full scan. Run Sophos AntiRootkit. Run Raxco Perfect Disk.
It certainly feels that my rig runs faster afterwards. Maybe it's my imagination.
