Windows 8 Dev release

Well after about an hour of running Win 8 in Vbox, I deleted the vhd. Windows 8 will work great for a smart phone or tablet, desktops not so much I think.

I only hope the option to change / disable the Metro UI is in the final build, but do have fears it wont be.. I've been in it all day and I still struggle using elements, in all other OS upgrades it has felt intuitive or logical, this one doesn't to me. But hopefully I'm wrong :D

And if im not wrong, theres always re-enabling the start button

I had it running in Virtual Box and wasn't a big fan however, i installed it as the main OS on a spare machine and i find it looks and feels much better.

Considering we are still at the very beginning of the releases i am quite happy with it and think i could quite easily adapt to the metro look.

anyone knows how to dual boot this with a windows 7 installation?

Just install it on an empty partition, it will auto detect Win 7 and give you a choice on boot :D Soo much nicer running it outside a VM

anyone knows how to dual boot this with a windows 7 installation?

I stuck in an old drive into my machine as drive 0 and recabled my Win7 drive as drive 1 and when I installed it it installed a dual boot loader (nice one too!) that allowed me to choose from Win8 or Win7 automatically on startup.

And if I get tired of that I can remove drive 0 and put drive 1 back in it's place and get the old win7 back. (er, I'm assuming)

This /may/ work also if you have an empty partition to install into on the same drive as your working windows 7.

I selected Custom install to specifically clear out and install on my drive 0...

I'm DLing the 32-Bit version to test on my old PC (yes, the ol' thing is still around). Once I play around on that for a bit, I'll DL the 64-bit version and install it on a spare hard drive and text it on this more powerful PC :)

You're right Carl, this seems to be a bit "runny in the middle" yet. It seemed better after I installed on its own physical HDD. To me it looks like a meld of 2 OSs.

Like the new task manager plus in the control panel it has a app to restore back or something like that to Windows 7 installed on VMware workstation because VMplayer player would not let the install go through gave an internal error. Well nice to get this build to play with. The build with the tools does it give you many other features.

Yeah the flipping back and forth between the "desktop" in the regular windows mode and the "Start Screen" in metro is a clumsy experience. It does seem like you are tabbing between two completely different OSes.

I'm sure that in the end, depending on the application, you will really be able to choose one or the other. I mean I can't see using any of those metro apps on a normal desktop or laptop at all. Unless it was some casual pass by and look thing, almost a kiosk. I'm actually salivating about a hang-on-the-wall low-power all-in-one kiosk computer running the metro UI with all the weather and such apps on it... But then I NEVER want to see the desktop UI without some arcane sequence of mouse gyrations for admin work only. And conversely I have zero interest in any of the metro UI or apps on my desktop. :/

I installed the x64 version on a bare 500 gig drive that had been pre-formatted. I also chose full install, not an upgrade and it seemed to work fine on my i5 w 8gigs ram. found all my devices but for some reason can't figure out how to change the work group or find any of my network printers. but I personally don't care for the large icon screens that evidently are taken from the xbox or some other product that I don't use.

I will muck thru it to determine how things go, will try to install office 2010 now

I have dos 6.22, wfwg 3.11, win98, 2000 and xp VHD's available for testing. MS's Virtual PC works great.
Installing the 32-bit version on my test machine right now (my old Athlon XP 2400+ at 2.0GHz).

UPDATE: After the installation, no matter if you had XP, Vista, or 7, it keeps your Admin password. After playing with it for a bit, it seems to be pretty easy to get used to, but it some weird way to put together an interface, I don't like the way it is put together though, I want to keep a traditional desktop.

new metro thing is kinda useless....its nice and all but unless all apps get to use it at full, there`s no point for it.

For example Chrome or Firefox don`t work like IE 10 does, full screen metro style. Anyway there`s times, its still pre-beta.

Only good things until now anyway. i like the new "8" . Waiting for the RC1 for a main OS .

I am quite taken aback at the number of people posting here who don't understand that this is not a fully-functioning OS, and that it's target audience with the current design is developers and OEMs, not consumers (and as such, it's going to have silly things that will affect usability - this build doesn't care about that, it cares about giving devs and OEMs a platform to start building things against). Reminds me of an article on Gizmodo recently:

If You Already Hate Windows 8 Then You Hate Technology

Uh.....how can one not be aware of this? Everyone who's got problems with 8 has them for legit reasons. Not sure why this is so difficult to understand.

That gizmodo link is a crock of elitist BS. Why am I not surprised it was written by someone who loves Apple and Democrats? Rips everyone who doesn't see the world in his POV as a fanboy, when he's the very thing he claims he can't stand.

Vista was junk, 7 is great. I was giddy over the earliest iterations of 7, not repulsed. I've got a nice smartphone, getting ready to buy a tablet, don't buy real books, don't subscribe to any print publication, I can't write legibly any more because I've been using a keyboard my entire adult life, wish I was typing this on a quantum computer. How the @#$%! does this make me a hater of technology?

I plan on trying every version of 8 before its release, because I'm curious if it will be as revolutionary as some gizmodo clown says it is. The general concept is great. The execution so far stinks.

I'm still waiting to try out this beast, but sadly my version of vmware does not support windows 8. And not to mention I am too cheap to upgrade for $99.00 to vmware 8 to test it out. Hopefully as many have reported the (Metro UI) will not taint the desktop experience as seen in tests so far. I am still hopeful Microsoft will offer A valid Desktop experience instead of a half baked Windows Phone OS across the board.
