Windows 8 is so ugly

We have Windows 8 because Microsoft is in the business of making money. Windows 7 was a great money maker for MS but it's peak is gone so they need a new revenue stream.

I think their hope is if it's different enough people will buy it. If it was just Windows 7 Plus people would not buy it.

I don't agree with this, just my thoughts on why we have Windows 8.

They pushed nearly 40 million copies just the first few days. They aren't having trouble selling it.
I've been using windows since roughly 1992-93 I've never been this hesitant about a new version. Maybe I've just gotten that old, I don't know.

That's the point I don't understand...and the point I've been trying to make this entire thread. I'm not suggesting you run out and buy a copy...but download the 90-day trial. People "fear" it from listening to other people talk about their fear...that they got from hearing other people who heard it from others, and so on.

In reading these boards and others, the "fear" is held by the people who haven't tried it. Those who have, get passed that fear and then they realize they have two valid Windows OS choices for their computer...Windows 7, and Windows 8. Many people, like me, have licenses through TechNet and/or from computer purchases, so cost isn't an issue. I don't know if I'd pay retail $100+ for it just now, especially if I already had Window 7 licenses, but I had no problem paying $14.99 for my OEM upgrade.

I have several licenses for Windows 8, including two non-TechNet ones that I paid for. Those count towards sales, but I haven't installed them yet, so they wouldn't affect internet usage. Also think about computers that have been purchased as Christmas presents, and not yet unboxed.

Regardless of what it looks like, I will not be buying 8. I do not like the lack of a Start menu and I really do not like the Modern UI. I understand what Micosoft is trying to do by unifying the UI across all platforms but on a traditional desktop it just doesn't work, at least for me.

That can be easily fixed, even without spending any money. I've tried several of the products out there, and to my surprise, they work extremely well. My Windows 8 machine boots to a desktop that would be identical to a Windows 7 machine in look, feel, and function.

It's no good, W8 is already been dubbed Vista v2, you can't win. And the most annoying thing as you've already stated, a lot of comments are coming from people who:
A) Haven't tried it
B) Ran the CP had there worst fears confirmed when it loaded and they saw the Metro interface and went no further.

The only real issue with Windows Vista sat between the keyboard and the chair - And I'm beginning to think it's the same problem here with W8.

Vista had alot more issues than just the user.
I have not used 8, I've read/watched enough about it that I won't even install it. I can learn it, but I choose not to. If I have a tablet device I would install it, but not on my three 22" displays. I never upgrade to the next anything unless I look at reviews and what people are saying. This is one of those cases.

I'll put together a lot more, but the solution I'm leaning towards is StartIsBack. It works out to be $1, but it does everything I want, with simple customization options. It allows booting right to the Desktop, so you'd never see the MetroUI unless you wanted to.

This is the actual Win7 Start Menu, grafted onto Eight at the same time it allows you to toggle off Metro gaining back the RAM it hogs: Windows 7 Start Menu for Windows 8.

It will prompt you for the 7 disk, but if you have a Dual Boot it will go find the 7 cache and even load your current Start Menu settings in seconds.

Why does everyone act like memory is an issue when practically everyone I know is operating on 4 to 8 gigs? I really just don't understand this. I personally have 16 and never use a 1/4 of it with the exception of VM which I don't use that much anymore.

This was explained by the app developer as a reason why 8 seems faster after grafting on the 7 Start Menu: when toggling off Metro it doesn't load it or the apps into RAM, nor have the Aero overhead of 7.

I am undecided as to whether it is faster. I prefer Win7 either way.

I guess if you are a big gamer you would need lots of memory, but otherwise most applications do not even use close to 4gigs

I can count on one hand the number of games I know of that even would even do so.

I have the same feelings. They lost the right way... just for market's rules....
I don't know if people will love it...(never you know....!), I only hope the Ms team bring quickly W9....
About the "control" ....don't be dreamers.....there is enough control with w7 too....
I want and will stay with W7, but by the time they'll push us to w8....you know the story...

DeaconFrost, you made it look that everybody that complain over Windows 8 has not tried it, or has just tried one of the earlier versions.

Well, I have tried the latest free of the "before final release" versions (can't remember the name), and after it was released I in fact went to Microsoft website to buy a download upgrade of Windows 8 Pro. As I'm the proud owner of a XP and a Windows7 licence, I choosed to upgrade my XP licence, so I am totally legal in using both Windows 7 and windows 8.

When that said, I have had a numerous problems with Windows 8:
It is Ugly as he.. in desktop mode, and even uglier in Metro. No 3.par program can give me back areos! I use Classic shell to get a working start-menu, and to skip that ugly Metro. But windows is still full square, full blokcolor, and look as something from windows 98, IMHO

Very poor performance with USB 3.0 which I use as backup for running processes (there is now an unofficial workaround to get Windows 7 USB3.0 driver run in windows 8, but why should we have to do this? Intel won't make a new driver, they stated)

I use a program called SOUNDTAXI to convert wma files to mp3. That is making a terrible soundquality compared to using same method and program in windows 7.

Can't seem to get Intel Rapid Start to work stabil in windows 8. Works 100% in windows 7.

My InternetSecurity don't work 100% with Windows 8 (Kaspersky Internet Security 2013). It can't run with JAVA, nomatter which browser I use (tried IE10, Chrome and Firefox), and here in Denmark we NEED to use java, as all lockin to homebanking is done in JAVA. So either no IS or no homebanking when using Windows 8.

Why is Windows 8 starting to scroll sideways? I have a Page Up and a Page Down button on my keyboard to scroll up and down, but I don't have a Page Left and Page Right button??

In the first 3-4 weeks of owning Windows 8 I used it as my default OS (except when in homebank), but I get too annoyed with it. I'm back at Windows 7, and my games does NOT run slower in windows 7 than in windows 8, my project is still proccessed in the background without troubble in windows 7 and it is even backed up (using USB3.0), so I am one that have tried Windows 8 and found it too troubbled to like it. (I can't speak of Vista as I have never owned it)

Did you happen to do an upgrade install or a clean install? It really does make a difference.
