Windows 8 is so ugly

I was actually offered a computer today, I almost accepted it.
Then I went to find out what it would cost me to get windows 7 on it.
They've made win 7 more expensive than win 8?
All the sudden the sales numbers make sense to me.

I don't get all the hate. I test ran a Windows 8 installed laptop the other day (first time actually using it for more than just a few minutes) and I have to say that once you know where to find things, it's actually quite usable. Frankly, I understand wanting to extend W7 fluency directly to W8 with no modifications, but it's not a huge inconvenience.

That said, I didn't get a chance to run it through serious paces. It does sound like from several testimonies that W8 introduces some program issues, where media conversion is involved. Seems odd to me, as wouldn't this be a driver issue?

A clean install. I always do clean installs, and nomatter what, it is NOT possible to do an upgrade from Windows XP x86 to Windows 8 Pro x64. You should know that.

I ran all the test versions of Windows 8 since day1 (in a virtual partition) and decided that I would not use it. I bought an Android tablet instead - and that is a LOT of fun. Hardly use the PCs any more. I guess I will still keep them (although the wife suggested to put them on eBay), but they will stay on /7.

But I can understand that the playmobile generation may like /8.

I just finished migrating back to Windows 7. Ran Windows 8 for over a month and decided I still didn't like it.

If I'm not going to use the Modern interface then why spend a lot of time and effort to make it look and feel like Windows 7, just use Windows 7, so that is what I did.

I realise how much I really did miss the Aero Glass look. Windows 7 just looks more finished.

I disabled Aero glass on my notebook to save on resources and I don't miss it at all.

I must be getting old.....

I hated Windows when I first started using it - why the hell do I need a GUI to accomplish the same things I can easily do with a few command lines? Noooo, I have to click this, click that, drag it here, drop it there.... surely this is neat stuff, but it's just a Apple knock off... and real computer people don't use Apple hardware - that's a great paltform for the artsy folks, not the hardcore developer doing 'real' work'.

Sheesh! I normally don't upgrade OSes until it's loaded on the next machine I puirchase, so I might not ever see what all of the hub-bub is all about.

I was thinking about the start button so many people twitch about and it dawned on me that the entire window is the start button, maybe that's why it's not winning any beauty contests..

I'm sure that Win8 8 is great under the hood, people just don't like the styling.

I certainly do! My dad had a Dodge, I can't remember the model, with wings when I was in elementary school.

Yeah, I loved those fins - especially on this 59 Caddy you show. But my real favorite was the 58 Eldorado Biarritz convertible. In the early 70s I could have bought one in California for little money but was hesitant because I did not have a place to store it.

In 1964 I bought a 59 Dodge with the fins. But that was not as pretty as the Caddies. It was just a car to go to and from the office. It had the push-button gear selection.

Last Thursday, I attended a Microsoft event launch for several of their new products. While most of it was Windows Server 2012 focused, it spent an hour long session on Windows 8. Maybe it was the fact I was sitting through a live demo, or maybe it was due to the fact that the presenter was excellent, but I walked away with an absolutely new appreciation for Windows 8 and what it is trying to accomplish.

Even the instructor said that most people, including himself, did not find Windows 8 too appealing in the beginning, but after actual usage, find themselves loving the features. Microsoft makes it very easy to try (at no cost) so what do you have to lose?

The Features are all Well and Good BUT it is the UI that I do not want and I will not use. Simple fact is MS Screwed up. Fine for pad and phone, Not so for desktop or notebook. Win 8 UI just isn't going to cut it, for me that is.

I cannot agree more!!! Win 8 looks like a kid's toy! I don't want to "tap" anything. Julien Manici put out a alpha app for 7 that gives you a look at what the "wonderful" experience would look like, without compromising your box. Grrrrooaaaannnnn................ Dell has some good deals on desktops right now and, by gosh!, in comes with win7 Pro! Somebody is thinking. I agree with Lady Fitzgerald; it's MY box and I will decide what it does and when. I don't need Redmond in my face! :devil:

If that's your only complaint, that's like saying you refuse to drive a new car because you don't like the smell of the tires. My Windows 8 install boots and looks just like Windows 7...going right to the desktop. I find myself using the Metro UI screen almost like a screensaver. I switch to that when I'm working on something else on my desk, so I have a "live update" of sorts on my screen. When I'm back needing to use my computer, I am back on the desktop.

Sorry but there is no logical reason for having to make all those changes. MS should of made them, and or given the user the choice, from the beginning.

Same here. If I want to use Metro, I have to log out and then log back in, but I rarely do so. I think one of the biggest gripes with Windows 8 is the fact that you have to use third party apps if you want it to run like 7. Personally, I enjoy tweaking things, so it isn't a big deal, but then that's me. But Windows 8 is designed to be a more secure OS than any of its predecessors, which is why I use it.

Most of us spent the better part of 2012 to test the pre-versions of Windows 8. So we all have a good understanding of what the system looks like. And we came to different conclusions:

One group thinks that it is a system that fits their bill and have purchased and installed it. That is OK.

The other group thinks that it is not their cup of tea and decided to skip it. And that is an acceptable position too.

Maybe there is a third group (of which I am part) that thinks Windows 8 is interesting but as it is presented right now they would rather not use it - hoping that MS will develop some improvements so that we can hop on the bandwaggon later on.

Any of those positions are acceptable and I think there is no need to start a war of words trying to convince the other group. However, it is good practice to point out the good and the bad so that we all get a better understanding of what Windows 8 really is.

I have no problems with people sticking to Windows 7. I plan to do so on certain systems of mine as well.

The part I took issue with is what I'd call the "Vista Effect". It's baseless bashing of a product that comes from hearsay, at best. In fact, many of the criticisms in this very thread can be considered baseless, as admitted by those posting them that they didn't come from experience. Others, can be completely dissolved with a quick setting or tweak. There's merit to the debate of what choices Microsoft should have included, but they hardly "forcing" anyone to use a certain UI. If that were true, Microsoft would be blocking and barring all 3rd party attempts to add those features in, and I can say with first hand knowledge, they won't be doing so.

If someone doesn't want to use Windows 8, so be it, it's their systems...but there's no need to bash the product, or turn a nose up to it.

Would someone buy a new car and then go to a 3rd party part store so they could change the steering wheel, mirrors, tires, seats so the new car works as good as their old car. In my case the answer is no.

This is my point too. If I want Windows 7, I use Windows 7. No point tweaking Windows 8 to look like Windows 7.

But there is nothing wrong with Windows 8 if you like it the way it is. I personally don't, but that is just me. I like my systems to be 'comfortable' out of the box.
