Windows 8 is so ugly

^ I agree. I do not like the 2D approach they've taken. GPU's and CPU's are plenty powerful enough for the devices that will be running W8, that we can have a little eye candy. I'm using Aero on Vista and W7, and I don't find it laggy.

The thing is, some folks have done their own personal shoot-out tests pitting W7 vs. W8 and found that W8 runs a little smoother/faster in some cases. With a W7 theme mod on W8, you should be all set to go. But that is, like Deacon White said, if you really need to get a new operating system. For an existing computer, W7 is more than enough for most people. If you have a large tablet device, well then W8 is probably the better choice.

This all comes back to it being a tablet OS. In that medium it makes perfect sense.
I just hope win 9 at least brings back the desktop as we know it.
More than likely it'll be something else trying to force everyone into purchasing new touchscreen devices though...

I'd hope that W8 customers wouldn't have to wait for W9, and could get a service pack that provides a "retro" desktop option if so desired.

I don't think it is ugly. Maybe a bit of organisation of the tiles (shortcuts) is necessary but once that's done, I find the appearance and usage acceptable enough on my Desktop computer:

If I had the option to enable aero and put my files back the way I want them without jumping through hoops, it would pretty much eliminate my complaints.

So it seems the endless stream of gripe threads has now migrated to Win8. Over the years there has almost always been one going complaining about Win7, having to given up XP, etc.

This one is funny because it greets us every day with a title that sounds like "Yo mama is so ugly" jokes.

M.E. I remember by far being the least stable at the very least. It was a blue screen nightmare when it was working at its best.

I liked Vista as well, once all of my necessary drivers were released. Us TechNet subscribers had it early, and really had some rough times finding drivers. At least it improved a little after consumer release.

I'm quite happy with Vista. It's my daily computer's primary operating system. It works. Start up time has slowed down a little since I installed more software on my recent fresh installation of Ultimate, and really didn't add any services that I can see as being resource hogs. But it still works fast enough that I don't feel fidgety and frustrated waiting for it. But I've got to put W8 through its paces with some tests that are meaningful for me and see if it's a noticeable improvement.

That Metro UI drives me crazy. Tried to remove it but seems that the most recent Windows 8 versions have patched it.
I was kinda expecting this 8 to be a fail. Take a look at this:
Windows 98 SE -> Good
Windows 2000 -> Bad but not so much
Windows XP -> Good
Windows Vista -> Bad
Windows 7 -> Good
Windows 8 -> Bad
Windows 9 -> Good??? (Who wanna bet? )

No need to resurrect an old post...or continue posting in one. Anyway, it's been beaten to death, but Windows 8 isn't bad at all...especially not when you actually use it. I have been running it on my Ultrabook for well over 2 months now, and I can't tell you the last time I saw the Start screen or anything Metro related. Instead of following the sheeple and bashing Windows 8...get to know it, and catch up on the available products (even free ones) that do what you want.

"De-Uglification" of desktops on ANY OS can be done with a certain amount of customisation.

Actually one of the NICEST desktop backgrounds that I liked was the "Unofficial - never released" Luna Black scheme on XP.

I got this to work on Windows 2003 server (I found windows 2003 server running as a desktop with a little bit of fiddling to get a server more appropriate to run as a desktop far better and more robust than XP).

I'll admit though I don't miss Aero one bit.

Install Windows 7 Start Menu for Windows 8 freeware which grafts on the actual Win7 Start Menu, toggles off Metro so it doesn't load into RAM and therefore makes 8 seem a bit faster.

You can always toggle back to Metro, but if you don't and decide to abandon the 8 apps you'll need to adjust your Default Programs in Control Panel, and/or uninstall them from Metro screen.
