"Windows 8 Survey: Half Who Have Tried the OS Wouldn't Recommend It"

Just had to bail out to WIn7 for the first time in the week I've been dual booting. Firefox Google Maps script starting running wild, totally hung and never resolved unless Stop Script. Flash in, need Java?

The desktop is still there you just have to endure a bunch of terrible toy like menus to do the same things you could in previous versions. I think the statement "the desktop is alive and well" is a major stretch of the imagination. :p

Don't tell me they pulled the plug on the registry hack and other workarounds in the RC. I do not play with W8, so I only go by what I've heard, and I heard there were workarounds like that one. Please enlighten.

The thing I personally don't understand is why didn't Microsoft just do the same thing that Apple does with iOS or whatever? Extending the Windows Phone platform from mobile phones to tablet "PCs" and keeping the traditional desktop experience for traditional computers, both desktops and laptops, doesn't sound bad at all; there would certainly be more hype in the tablet market.

As it is now, I feel like Windows 8 gets to be a bit risky to use in terms of security, with all those different possibilities the Metro UI brings. It's distracting from things that need to be done, which is rarely a good thing for power users; not to mention that the Metro UI and the traditional Aero UI don't match - not even close. They should've chosen one and stuck with it. Though they claimed otherwise, it LOOKS just like they simply built Metro on top of the Desktop, despite their statement that this isn't the case.

To me the whole MetroUI thing just looks like a colossal commercial for Windows Phone OS - users that like its possibilities would probably (and that's just my assumption) consider getting a WP rather than an Android or something.

On the other hand, I can understand that, with MS' 3-year cycle of new OSs, Windows 8 wouldn't bring much improvement over 7 without Metro, or I guess that's at least what MS thought; but the thing is: IT DOES! I wouldn't mind "having" to upgrade to Win8 for performance enhancements and tweaks and things that updates for Win7 can't achieve. This is also why I preferred Vista over XP back when it was released. XP was a system quickly left to rot from the inside while Vista had shiny (and I don't mean that literally) new looks, updated system apps...

The progress could be felt! Windows 8 doesn't really have that as a whole package without Metro, but if they had split those two ideas from the very beginning, we would have an extended WPOS for tablets and something truly awesome for desktops and laptops.

Chicken doesn't go with cake, so why should I use Metro on top of my Desktop?

That is exactly the point: There's no reason to have it that I can see unless you have a touchscreen.

Don't ask if you're going to reject an honest answer.

No, no, I'm not rejecting anything, I was just thinking purely software-wise, the whole 7 VS. 8 thing, since most people here seem to agree about which is better.

who used the word 'most'?

but now that you've bought it up, go out onto the street and ask a few random strangers 'what is windows explorer?'

i would be prepared to bet that most people won't know.

an example: my mother has been using xp for about 8 years, for email, internet messaging etc. if i told her to 'open up windows explorer', she doesn't know what i mean.

My wife wouldn't know either. lol, everything she uses is mapped to hot keys on the keyboard. While most here would figure out how to get around in Windows 8, there are only a select few of the people I know, that I work on PCs for, that would figure it out. Most would give up in frustration or call me and say WTF! In that video, they left out the part where he pulls the power cord out of the wall socket to turn the PC off. It's pretty sad when you have to Google how to shut a Windows 8 PC down. Way to go Microsoft. :sarc:

Yeah, the biggest problem with the metro interface is that it is infused with magic. Literally. Much like the Linux command line. And if you don;t know all the magic incantations it just stares back at you and does nothing. Figuring out how to close or even escape a metro app is daunting the first time.

I just ran into a new discovery yesterday. I had turned the computer on and then not logged in right away and that roll down shade came up when I got back to the computer. I hate having to mouse gesture to get that thing out of the way, why can;t I just click on it? But anyway, I sort of autopiloted it like my normal desktop and just started typing my password and viola! It rolled up on it's own. What do you know... who would have just thought of trying that? (Same for Windows search on the metro screen, I had to be told about that one, who just types with no input location? That usually causes all kinds of BAD behavior in whatever random program you were in)

Then entire interface is filled with that kind of magic, but only the magicians will be able to navigate it. There are so many people that are not magicians :( They NEED visual clues to behavior, not JUST during learning but up to every time they need to use a function that you only need once every couple of months.

The magic is "Neat" once you master it, but I seriously worry about those that don't or can't :/ The UI can be /extremely/ frustrating at times.

Hopefully 8 will not have Metro as the default opener but as something to be turned on, if anyone wants it. i won't buy a table or touch screen to see how "awesome" Metro is.

If i ignored metro (believe me thats all i did) i felt i was downloading windows 7 sp2.
Underneath improvements where great, explorer update, iso & a doc reader built in, but it will not get the attention because of Metro.

I can't say as I blame the 1/2 that wouldn't recommend it. Microsoft really screwed up on this on
We've been doing the same thing since the dawn of Windows, and now basically they're trying to say 'no, you're doing it wrong, do it another way'.

Sorry, Microsoft, you lose this one. Win Mobile sucks, and trying to force it on your customers will only cause them to just abandon your company.
