"Windows 8 Survey: Half Who Have Tried the OS Wouldn't Recommend It"

You CAN organise the new start screen just like you could organise the old start menu...

I must be missing something - can you give me a clue on how to begin?

What I have is a mess of Office icons. I would like to create an Office folder and over all those icons into that folder. Click on the folder to display the Office programs.

Then I'll do the same for my other apps.

Regards,
GEWB

Enough! I've struggled with it ever since it first came out and still don't like it. I sincerely hope that the final version will come with a "disposable" metro interface so we can use the Start menu on desktops. Keep metro by all means for tablet/phone usage, that I can understand.

If MS release Win 8 as an upgrade from Win 7 for about £20 - £30 I might consider it. But if it is released, as Win 7 was, for some £70 then it will have no place in my remaining years.

I reformatted the partition and reset boot using EasyBCD. Now happy :D:D

OK, I gave it the old college try - this Windows 8 really (fill in the blank) big time. Tutorial is good but Win 8 doesn't let me organize start icons as I want or create a folder to hide (nest) the icon into. (Maybe I'm still missing something...)

This is one of the WORST desktop interfaces I have encountered - and I thought some Linux distros I tried were bad! Win 8 make those Linux distros look like the best thing since sliced bread!

I think I'll stick with Win 7 when I need Windows and my several flavors of Linux for my everyday computer needs.

GEWB

Does anyone have this installed on a tablet or touchscreen yet?

I think it is a completely different experience running on a machine it is obviously designed for.

Like putting the top down on a convertible instead of a hardtop. :banghead:

I haven't seen anyone install it on an HP TouchPad and I'm not willing to chance turning mine into a brick. If you have seen it done, point me in the direction (running WebOS).

Hello everyone, I guess I will now register my dislike for Windows 8, as so many others have. Tried it for a while in VirtualBox. It was an easy install. I just do not care for the user interface. Maybe with a touchscreen my experience would have been different.

Let me just say that I hope Microsoft supports Windows 7 for a long time, 'cause I surely will not buy Windows 8 . JMO

Best regards, Frank

my first impressions aren't favourable. metro + mickey = fail

maybe it's just neophobic inertia, i'll give it another few days, it might grow on me...

i loved my first experience with 7 RC, and knew straight away that it was the OS for me. i'm not feeling that at all with 8 - yet, at any rate...

i'm sure it's a very competent OS, but personally (and i'm certainly not the only one!) so far usability is hampered by the revolutionary UI - or should I say the mix of two disparate UIs?

will microsoft listen to all us old dinosaurs and give us an option to bring our start-button and menu back??

(has anybody called it windows hate yet? :p)

I think it will be a lot higher than that.
But, I hope Microsoft is ready for this big fall...

hello... is there any tutorial in this website on how to use easybcd to reset boot?

I just fired it up, selected "Edit Boot Menu", deleted the entry for Win8 consumer preview, ticked the box "skip boot menu", saved it all and that did it. I then deleted the partition on which I had been dual booting Win8.

I don't know if that was the correct way to use it, but it worked ;)

I ask if anyone has run Win8 on a TouchPad and gregrocker commented that a table is what Win8 is made for...

Found the answer (for now) - no, it does not run on most tablets yet as MS hasn't released an ARM chip version yet.

GEWB

Hello gregrocker -

A quick search turned up over a dozen references...boiled down to this:

  • HP and other manufacturers are playing with Win8 on their tablets
  • Microsoft has not released an ARM version to the public for testing
You are correct that Win8 appears to be targeted at the tablet market. As of a week ago I could not find a public release to test. If you know where I can download an ARM version of Win8 I'll give it a try.

Regards,
GEWB

Is there a Plan B if Windows 8's Metro fails?

Over the last two weeks, the Windows 8 Consumer Preview has been dissected by the technology press at large, and the general consensus about the new Metro start screen UI has been one of befuddlement.

It’s like Wile E. Coyote took over the UI development team at Microsoft because he’s obsessed with chasing the iPad Road Runner.

I find this a bit disconcerting because this befuddlement is largely coming from people who hail from actual technology backgrounds themselves.
