Exactly this. Then again this is just the alpha , it's probably completely different from the final result. (i hope ) We can judge it more accurately with the beta i think , its only about 20 days away.

I've been running the Developer Preview since September and I think it's great. I've customized the Start Screen as much as I can with a couple third party apps and I think it looks nice. I don't regard the Start Screen as a touch GUI for my desktop, I think it's more like a backstage view of the Desktop.

Personally, I can't wait for a further expansion of metro design. It's everything every software designer would love to see: clean, easy to read, and vibrant.

But, since Windows 8 is about HUGE changes, I wonder if the lock screen a user chooses can become the boot screen background since honestly, most desktop users won't really lock their PCs unlike mobile users. If the lock screen with all the notifications, maybe, along with a boot animation, I think it'd look nice.

Hi there
You mention that it is what a Software designer would like --but what about THE USERS.

I don't actually mind the metro UI --but would like to be able to customize the applications so it's more suitable as a desktop than having it look and feel like "Android Mk II".

i THINK THERE is LIFE IN w8 BUT please no more of those HORRIBLE tablets. I can just about stomach a smart phone but why on Earth would I choose a tablet over a nice small light Netbook where you can attach PROPER peripherals at will and run a desktop OS.

Cheers
jimbo

You might not chose a tablet over a netbook but it seems a lot of people do. I guess it all depends on what you want. I'd like to get my hands on an ASUS Transformer Prime, a tablet with touch screen when you want and an almost netbook with keyboard the rest of the time. I might even run Windows 8 on it. :)

Hi there
That Asus "tablety thingy" you mention is ABSOLUTELY horrible -- it's not easy to either dock or undock the keyboard and it can't run any sensible OS yet. If you don't undock the keyboard it's really unstable when used as a screen with a keyboard. It'll tip over just by LOOKING at it.

At least an ASUS Aspire one proper netbook can plug in to a decent HDMI monitor, load up a proper workstation OS on it, run apps like Photoshop and MS office and can plug in a whole host of peripherals to say nothing of the fact that it's probably 100 - 150 EUR CHEAPER than the tablet !!!!, about the same size and certainly no heavier.

With 4GB RAM installed and a halfway decent processor installed its performance is actually quite respectable and certainly fit for purpose while travelling too provided you don't go bonkers with it.

Even better with an SSD drive installed.
I even run vmware workstation on this with a W2003 server as a virtual machine for some old legacy XP apps. Works perfectly acceptably for the apps I'm running.

I can't imagine sitting on say a Eurostar train and attempting to create a powerpoint presentation on one of those tablets -- and for surfing / email a decent Samsung smart phone works just fine.

Yet the Netbook works 100% fine.

Cheers

Clearly for you its not an option, me I can live with the shortcomings. By the time I actually manage to but aside enough spare cash to purchase one things may well be different. Only time will tell. Obviously you wouldn't use one even if somebody gave it to you, if that should happen though I know where you could send it. :)

From the outset, I'm a desktop man.

I've got an ACER AspireOne Happy, and I'm, well, happy with it. I've got two problems with it, however: 1) somewhat difficult to up the RAM on it. So it is a little sluggish (or very sluggish, IE hogs too much resources, so you can't really keep it vanilla). 2) As with all laptops, even this little critter, has woeful battery life.

I've also got the ACER Iconia Tablet (the A500): Cons, impossible to have Windows on it. Pros: 1) Android is not so bad and is great for synching with my HTC Desire for files, calenders etc. 2) Excellent battery life. 3) Some of the apps I've used, are great.

That said, I' not entirely sold on the idea of a tablet-oriented OS as my main desktop OS. In praxis, it may well end up being excellent in implementation, but that green front-theme with those programs/apps displayed, it looks highly aesthetically displeasing. In small footprint monitors (such as a tablet) it would look awesome, but I just can't see it working out nicely on a normal monitor.

In any case, although I am currently of the view that I will be retaining my beloved Win7, and depending upon rave-reviews across the board, would I consider purchasing Win8 to go with my Ivy Bridge upgrade.

main reason i haven't attempted to try it after seeing Microsoft's presentation of win 8. For those have tried windows 8 does it run any better or about the same as win 7 and can you take off those tablet features and make it like a regular win desktop like win 7 if not. Then i don't want win 8 if its going to be tablet style only. Find it useless since 1. i don't own a tablet/ 2. i just don't like the interface 3.looks like win 7 just go put into a tablet format and was called win 8 and last 4.If I can't run it like a desktop and doesn't run any better then win 8 and runs the same or worse then i'm sticking with win 7. Call me a enduser but i really dislike that interface.

This is nothing but Win7 with a tablet GUI and some additional tweeks.......just can not figure out how Microsoft justifies the cost of the upgrade...suspect that the business community will see the same thing and skip this upgrade as many have/are uprading/upgraded to Win7.

As for the Android bashing that seems to permeate this thread......Its a far better tablet than ANY currently available Windows tabs....when Microsoft comes out with one, then and only then, will it be possible to compare Windows tablet to Android tablets and all the Android bashing is just so unworthy of this forum. As IT professionals we should be agnostic as long as the OS gets the job done in a way that satisfies users which the Android OS does indeed do....as for Microsoft office docs....Android will run 3rd party apps that interface with Word, excel, and Outlook as well as Exchange and OneNote.....lets get a life and keep our personal prejudices in check here......Android does indeed work (and work well) despite the negative comments here.

I have used Android since Froyo 2.2 and it is a joy to work with (Also very stable despite comments to to contrary, I would suggest that if an Android tablet is unstable that the user is probably responsible just like with Windows). Furthermore, tablets at this time are more about content consumption and application input than actual software systems development. Expecting to use a tablet for development is just wishful thinking......where they will shine is for Doctors, Teachers, Project managers, etc.

Desktops/Desktop replacement Laptops are where real work is still to be found and a windows tablet will not change this fact one little bit. They will still be for content consumption and data input from the field.

You should try Windows 8 before condemning it.

It has benefits over Windows 7, the current version is the Developer's Preview, an alpha version. Beta is rumored to be out next month, then we will know more of the new OS.

My prediction is that MS will allow the new UI to be disabled or hidden for all that aren't ready for it or just don't like it.

Just like anything new, it might take a while to get use to it.
No need to worry, there is always Windows 7.

I'm not condemning it....I said that I don't see enough differences to justify the cost to upgrade from Windows 7. XP yes.....Vista maybe......Win7 not enough ROI to justify the cost. I will be checking out the next release but if you are going to turn off Metro then you get Win7 desktop with tweaks and that does not in my opinion justify paying more than $100 each to get it for multiple machines when Win7 has only been out a couple of years. I would be the last person to tell anyone else not to pay for the upgrade but I doubt I will pay to upgrade any time soon....maybe when I buy/build my next pc (not all that soon since my current pc is a 7.1 - 7.3
WEI score except for the HDD at 5.9, and water cooled at that, my next upgrade will most likely be an SSD).

To tell you the truth, (and looks at own avatar), if monitor manufacturers could being out a setting like this, Id be first to snap it up:

Star Trek Set Up

I've read through a couple of articles on Win8, so far, the main detractor has been the updates issue, where you'll be forced on the third day to have your OS updated. (and by detractor, I mean that this is how the journalist stated that some might view this process) My main concern is how well will the tablet transfer to the desktop - I'd be more than happy to buy Win8 (just as I've bought every iteration since Win95 ~C64 and AmigaOS before that), but I'd need to be convinced that such a translation has been spot on, in terms of final release. Fingers crossed!

We posted at the same time, I was replying to several posts previous to yours.

Definitely go for the SSD, it's the best noticeable performance upgrade you can do.

Hi there
Actually -- you can ignore some of the Metro apps on W8 and it DOES run very fast --however I can only test it on the developer preview which probably is a "slimmed down" version. You can read comments on the W8 Forum for more actual hands on experience people have had with W8 -- most seem to be favourable.

I'd wait to see what changes MS do in the Beta and final versions -- they might be quite different to the curent version.

I'm not sure I want a touch screen Desktop OS however. Why should I stick greasy mits all over that nice large OLED 60 inch screen !!!.

Cheers
jimbo

There is no way I would be using tablet interface on my 47"TV hooked up to my desktop or laptop. I already have huge problems with Win7, where my touchpad on my laptop is, not sure how to describe, "dragging" and I get completely unintended operations that pi###s me off beyond description: I want windows drag into corners to get more desktop space, they go full screen, I want to put cursor somewhere, it becomes screen scrolling gadget, the list goes on. I can understand why Android, Apple and other portable operating systems work the way they work, since they're used on phones and small tablets, I just don't understand why MS wants to make Win look and work like that. Maybe it is because MS never developed anything original with DOS being copy of CPM, Win copy of Macs, Excel bad copy of Lotus etc. etc. so why would they develop something original now, but c'mon copy Tablet operating system, developed for minimum hardware available inside a phone, ouch. Yeah, you're right this not even Beta, who knows how this will end up in final, but the direction they're going to is totally upside down, shouldn't Android and others try to emulate Windows to look more powerful, now that they get more powerful hardware? OOps, I forgot Win itself is nothing special.
Anyhow Win7 works fine for now (As soon as I disable those new tablet functions), why spend money and downgrade to copy of Android so my desktop looks just like my phone?
