Its going to be 2012 minimum. I am betting on mid 2013. So not two years, 3 or 4. The OS cycle is 3 to 5 years.

Damn got to wait that long; oh well, thank you MS for TechNet. :D

Maybe MS should pull an Apple, put out a new O/S every two years. Just purchased SL for $29.99; what a deal. :sarc: Hope it works with my G5 Power Mac with pre-intel chips. Oh no, my son said it doesn't, so he has it now.

If Microsoft want to stay at the top they have really to release a new OS every year at least like those Linux distributions.
If they don't they will have to release SP not only with bugs corrections but with new features too.
I think they should make Windows cheaper and release new versions more often.
They will be far away from those Linux distributions if they don't change their habits. And I really think they have understood that because when you see how they build Windows 7, it is completely different than the previous versions of Windows.
So I think they have already started to change the way they build new OS and it is a good thing.
That's the only way to integrate the new technologies that come out every weeks...

No. If M$ does that, the OS will only get worse. I would rather they have a 5 year cycle, with really good OSs in it. If I want a new one every year, I will go grab Ubuntu of Fedora (I am now actually :D)

They have been at the top of desktop installation for many years without having to release this quickly. I don't see this changing anytime soon.

And I really think they have understood that because when you see how they build Windows 7, it is completely different than the previous versions of Windows.
Actually 7 is very much like Vista...it's just more streamlined and better performing if you ask me.

The problem with having yearly releases of MS, is that people would be on so many versions and so many iterations that it would be hard to support. That is one of the good things and bad things with Linux. However, in the business world and the corporate dekstop world, having a certain level of commonality is always good.

No, I will wait for windows 9 that comes out just 3 years after that, or will wait for W10..... :D

the same with my hardware, I don't buy this year's quad-core because in 2 years there will be octa-cores, but I will skip those as well because in 3 years there are octacores with hyperthreading... actually i won't buy hardware and software untill all companies destroy their R&D capapbilities to ensure I really will have the most modern equipment for a long time :D

In communist countries you always had state of the art cars, even when it was 20 years old because they never changed the design. At least you didn't have buyers' regret :D

Windows 8 sux. I really hate the way [insert]. Windows [insert] was so much better. Why can't MS do things the way [insert] does? I know OS design much better than MS does and they should [insert].

[insert] and [insert].

then i will continue my window 7 RTM, and after that i will buy window 8.

Why will they? They've never had to before and linux pre-dates windows. I can't see them doing that at all. It'd lead to insignificant upgrades which people wouldn't pay for. People are happier to pay a significant amount every 3 - 5 years because that would be when most people buy a new PC.

if windows 8 is going to release on 2011, will u still buy window 7?

There is no freaking way in hell MS will release another operating system just a year after the release of Win 7. It will take most businesses at least a year to decide and then try to migrate to Win 7. After the bad experience MS had with trying and failing to convince business to accept vista, the last thing they want now is to have them looking past windows 7 to windows 8. That would also apply to most consumers as well. With the economy the way it is you'd be surprised at how many people/businesses are perfectly content with windows XP. Word of mouth more than any ad campaign will be the biggest seller of windows 7 for Microsoft.
