Windows Defender won't install?

Hi,

I recently upgrade from Windows Vista Business to Windows 7 Home Premium, no major problems, apart from having to reinstall my programs.

I installed Windows Security Essentials plus all the updates, no problems.

My attempts to install Windows Defender have failed miserably!

Firstly it advised:

'You do not need to install this software because Windows Defender is included in Windows Vista. You can access windows defender from the security section of the windows control panel'

Which is a bit strange seeing that I have Windows 7 Home Premium installed!

I then tried starting the Defender Service and got the message:

'The Windows Defender service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs'

Note: Windows Defender does not show up as an installed program.

Any ideas on how to solve this puzzle?

Windows 7 Features: Windows Defender

Win Defender is part of the OS in Win7 not a seperate add on.

MSE combines Defender functionality along with Virus scanning. MSE will also disable Defender, this is a normal function.

If you have MSE installed, you don't have to add Defender...you have it, along with active virus scanning.

Windows Security Essentials.

I didn't catch that you were refering to Microsoft Security Essentials.

As Borg stated MSE becomes primary and Defender is turned off.

If you remove MSE then Defender turns back on.

MSE is a full AV so I would stay with it.

Thanks gentlemen!

If MSE does it all I'm happy, I guess the daily scan searches for everything, viruses, spy ware, and malware.
So I don't need to install anything else?

MSE will run active background scans on your entire system once you boot, however I would recommended you do a full system scan at least once a week.

You can schedule these scans by going to the settings tab. Also, make sure everything is checked in Real-time protection.

It wouldn't hurt for you to add Malwarebytes to your arsenal and do a regular scan with that. Malwarebytes is an on demand scanner, so you'll have to run it on a regular basis, but it will not conflict with MSE. There is a free version which works very well.
