Windows Essentials Security???

I find avast free to work better then mse though that's just my oppion and have used both before with a couple months spread out through each and like avast better. I like how avast has a webshield that will do a pop up if you accidentally click on a known malicious site and it will automatically not let that page connect. I have malwarebytes on the side the free version which somtimes catches stuff that avast does not and that's just using the free stand alone free scanner with out the real time scanner in the paid version.

I'm considering trying it out. Is it simple to set in "scan only" mode? I don't like system wide prophylactics. But it's always nice to have another manual scanner that works well.

I just don't want to bother installing if it's going to insist on "shield" mode.

The idea of an AV is to block viruses, not just remove them after the fact. MSE has such a small footprint, you won't notice it running, even on a RAM starved machine like a netbook.

I know what the idea is. But I don't like the idea. It's like taking a shower with a raincoat on. So I take it the answer to my question is no.

That was a silly analogy, comparing apples to kumquats. Comparing an AV to a vaccination makes more sense. Same as getting vaccinated to avoid getting a disease, an AV prevents catching a virus on your computer. Granted, some of the paid AVs, especially the suites, such as Norton's, will act like a raincoat, blocking both good and bad and slowing your computer, but MSE will not hamper you that way.

OK, so for anti-virus... I got off the paid train a few years back and started using AVG Free and it seems to do a good job since I've not had any viruses.

But, I've noticed some folk be using Windows Essentials Security and claim it is doing a good job and i8s easy to use and may be a better option than AVG Free.

Any thoughts on the effectiveness of Windows Essentials Security?

Also, what are your thoughts on the program Malwarebytes?
Is it worth messing with? I've heard some good stuff about this prog...

HMP is a little different animal. You can install it, and have unlimited scanning for life. If it ever finds something (other than tracking cookies) then you can activate it for free, and you get malware removal for free, but for only 30 days, then you have to pay for it to use it beyond the 30 days.

I use it as a scanner only, and if it ever found something, I would see if MBAM, or Emsisoft Emergency Kit would find the same malware, and I would remove it with one of those programs. If only HMP identified it, I guess I would activate the free 30 day trial.
