Help!
I was happily using Win Essentials Movie Maker yesterday.
Then last night it refused to open.
I had downloaded some codecs so I removed them all. In fact, I removed everything that had been downloaded for the last 2 days.
I used CCleaner.
Still no luck.
After many failed tries and visits to MS Website, I uninstalled and downloaded the installer for a fresh installation. Actually, 2 installers: one for the 2011 version and one for the 2012 version.
Neither version will install. I can get it into the 90% range (in fact I have a screen shot of a momentary "100% download") but then I get the dreaded x80070643 error message.
According to MS, this is because firewall needs to be turned ON. Although according to MS tech "experts" it needs to be turned OFF.
I have tried both ON and OFF and get the same message.
I have tried installing the entire package; I have tried installing just the parts I want (photo & movie maker only.)
I have tried online and offline (the latter due to advice from MS tech "expert") and found that there is no installation while offline--the installation stalls.
I have tried deleting all relevant files in x86.
I have tried system restore (hoping to recover the old version, which I did, but it would not work.)
I will include some screenshots. (I have plenty!) :(

This is becoming somewhat of a personal mission, having spent over 8 hours in two days and gotten very little sleep last night due to this issue.

Tried that; didn't change anything. Same failure notice as the screenshot above.

Also tried restoring to an earlier point but wasn't allowed to select a point far enough back (due to the many download attempts). I would like to go back a week or so but that is not an option. Also tried going back as far as possible, then repeating the restore process. But for whatever reason I wasn't allowed to go back any further than the previous attempt, which left me without the program on my computer.

Actually I hit that selection in error, but I kind of liked the flag. Plus they have some very interesting customs and have invested their guano profits wisely.

Tried that already.
This is a known issue which seems related more to some quirk in the program rather than anything about the individual machine. The MS site "experts" are pretty useless, with conflicting advice; that's why I thought I would try here, hoping to find someone who had been through this and found a solution.

TZ,
Thank you for the input and link.

--Can you be a bit more precise as to which NET framework? Win Updates has installed scores of NET Frameworks, installing them on a regular basis.

--Is the uninstaller on the link secure? I have already run Uninstall and also gone into the x86 files to manually delete any residual items. After a number of unpleasant experiences from "safe" sites and downloads, I am leery of getting in any deeper.

The Win Movie Maker program isn't worth spending much more time on, and certainly not worth adding another problem to the mix. I like it; it does what I want; but there are other options.

Hi,
Net frame work was one search result that came up the page never actually loaded but showed on google and bing search,
It made the most sense the other errors really were for windows security essentials not (windows essentials 2014) bundle

I haven't used the link in a long time but can to see what it does but it it's a Microsoft fragment uninstaller for windows live essentials packages,
I'll report back after doing a traditional uninstall like you did and using the fragment uninstaller link .exe ans see what happens ;)
Cheers.

Well, I finally got WMM 2012 installed (don't ask me how), but it still won't run.
Here is a post from another user with exactly the same problem:
..........
Movie Maker cannot start - Does not meet system requirements - Microsoft Community

"Windows Live Movie Maker 2011 used to work but doesn't anymore?

"So, I have Windows Live Movie Maker 2011 on my laptop; I think that means it's like version 15 or 15.4 or something? Anyways, it's WLMM 2011..

"It used to work just fine; I made almost 25 videos for my YouTube channel on it. Then, almost exactly a week ago (tomorrow will be a week), I saw that it could update, so I figured okay, why not update to the latest version? BIG mistake. It updated to the 2012 version, which cannot run on my computer, since my laptop is about 3-ish years old, so it doesn't meet the minimum requirements and such. I completely uninstalled it, and then went to go and re-download the 2011 version so I could go back to making videos, but then once I did that... WLMM 2011 no longer works on my computer! It says my computer doesn't meet the minimum requirements. I found that strange, considering that's what I was using before, yet now that I got it back, it keeps giving me that error message.

"I looked at the minimum requirements, and apparently it says that your processor needs minimum 2.4GHZ, but mine apparently only has 2.2GHZ? I don't get how that's possible if my computer used to run WLMM 2011 before?"

[NOTE: one official MS site says that the minimum is 2.4GHz, yet another one--the one you get by clicking the link in the "can't open" popup--says 1.6GHz.]

"I tried restoring my computer to an earlier time before I updated to WLMM 2012 and ruined everything, but before I had that idea, I ended up removing/uninstalling a bunch of other programs I didn't need on my computer, so now the earliest time I can restore my computer to is already past the point where I've been having this problem, so it won't help me."

And there are many similar tales out there.

All I got was the same "cannot open" as always.

I did some more fruitless digging and doing.

WMM2012 STILL DOES NOT WORK. WILL NOT OPEN.

And again, NONE OF THIS ADDRESSES THE ISSUE OF WHY EVERYTHING RAN JUST FINE BEFORE.

Bottom line, I appreciate your input but I'm sick of messing with this. NO OTHER vid program, from PE12* to the simplest video trimming program, has given me any trouble. Therefore, I quit. This one was nice and simple while it lasted, but for me that party is over.

*It is interesting that on one MS site the sys req for WMM are considerably higher than for the far more complex and feature-rich PE12. Sloppy programming.

Free Download K-Lite Codec Pack 10.8.5 Full, Standard and Basic[/FONT]
I can't prove that this was the cause, but the problems started after I downloaded it. The purpose was to enable full screen video capture with DVD VideoSoft. (That never worked, either.)
Interestingly, all other video editors I have still work just fine, including the old MS Movie Maker 2.6.

Well that is interesting
I've never seen the need for any third party codec packs
If I ever needed a codec I would simply use vlc media player it plays just about everything ever recorded,

The same link that had the 2012 version just above the languages list is a drop down to select the 2009 version which it too has movie maker,
But yea life is short but obviously something is a miss,
Cheers.

For anyone with the same download/installation problem:
After wasting two days trying the many solutions proposed on a number of sites, including MS sites, I was able to download and install easily after disabling the password to my computer.
Unfortunately this does not solve the "cannot open" problem.
Meanwhile all other programs, including a new GOPRO editor which I easily downloaded and tests a few minutes ago, present no such problems.
