Windows Experience Index problem

Hi everybody!

I tried to look around for a thread with the same issue as me, but I couldn't find one, so I'm posting a new one with hopes of getting help with my problem.

When I'm trying to classify my computer, I always get into problem. When it tries to classify my primary disk it comes to a pint where it says it's done but then an error comes up. My screen bumb is in swedish, but I'll try to translate the text, and then maybe some of you guys know what the issue could be?

WEI_problem.png

The text says (roughly - google translate):
"It was not possible to calculate the performance rating for the computer.

Could not measure storage performance. The temporary file that was required for the action could not be saved to disk. Could not find a device that fits the file."

What could be wrong?

It has been like this ever since I installed Windows on my new SSD. At first I had dual boot with my old OS (also Windows 7 Ultimate x64, but installed on a HDD), but now I have completely removed my old OS. The WEI worked just fine on the old OS, no problem after the dual boot got installed.
Another problem I have with my SSD, wich may be related to this problem, is that I can't manage a virtual memory on my SSD. Every time I try to set a value for it on the SSD it throws back to 0 after reboot of the computer. It works just fine to have a virtual memory on one of the other disks. I've tried to disconnect my other disks but neither the virtual memory or the WEI works anyway.

So, the main problem is about WEI, but of course if the virtual memory issue could be fixed as well I would be more than happy! I suspect that the problems could be connected somehow.

Also have an Asus ha1002xp netbook with Win 7 Ultimate installed.
I don't really find any good answers in any of those other threads. I tried to deactivate and remove my Anti Virus (AVG Free) but it didn't help. On the other hand I saw that two other had Similar problems as me. Or at least one detail got my attention. They both had installed their OS on an OCZdisk. One of those two had actually tried two different OCZ-disks, but neither had worked. Both of them had tried WEI immediately after install and it didn't work. I also have my OS installed on an OCZ-disk...

The OS is installed on partition B:

Here comes my winsat log as well, if it's any help.
I noticed that it says "Unable to open temporary file. Largest available contigous space was : ~100MB". Is that what's wrong and what does it mean then?

Ahhh, I think you hit on it. It looks like it's trying to put the temp file on the System Reserved partition. Let me see if the Gurus have a fix for that. A Guy

EDIT: Actually, it looks like the issue may actually be the partition drive letter being B:. That's usually reserved for a second floppy drive. It may be that you have to change the drive letter.

Let me get some feedback before you attempt this.

But I'm not even sure if I have a system reserved partition...

Look at this picture. Shouldn't there be one here? I hadn't even thought about it before you said something now. I know there was one on the HDD where my OS was installed before, but then I dual-booted the new OS and I think the old one was being used by the new one as well. But I couldn't do the WEI then either.
Then I used some program (I think it was either VistaBootPro or EasyBCD, I don't remember) to make my partition B: bootable, because until then I always had to have my HDD connected to be able to boot. But now I'm not sure if I have a System Reserved Partition. Or is it just that I don't know where too look?

WEI_problem_2.png

All of those partitions shown are regular disks. B: is the one with my OS. C: is the same disk where I had me OS before. Now it's completely empty.

Ok, I have thought about changing the partition letter, but I'm not sure if things will still work afterwards. Is it safe to change the system partition letter just like that?

You can never change the OS drive letter or it will ruin it.

It appears WIn7 was incorrectly installed from another OS so that it could not claim C when booted as it always does when installed correctly from the booted Win7 installer.

I would unplug all other HD's, plug SSD into first SATA port and Clean Reinstall - these steps are the same for retail and will assure a perfect reinstall.

If you don't mind it on B which can provide problems in rare cases then I would run a few Startup Repairs on it to see if it finds issues needing attention.

We have found in countless thousands of cases here over three years that it's always best to transfer the boot files by Marking Partition as Active then running Startup Repair - Run 3 Separate Times rather than using EasyBCD or VistaBootPro editors. Startup Repair when run 3 separate times with reboots runs multiple required tests and fixes including rewriting the link to F8 System Recovery Options.

Hi MerWell, another thing in addition to the good suggestions here. Power off the machine and physically disconnect ALL hard drives except the one with W7 on it. Boot it up and see if the B drive is now listed as C drive. Make sure the W7 drive is connected to your number 1 or 0 SATA header, which ever your board calls it.

Then it's a good thing I didn't try to change it ;)

I actually did run the Startup Repair before I did the boot fix with whatever program I used (one of those two) but it only said I had a problem, but didn't fix it. I haven't tried runnig it after I fixed the boot though. Maybe I should give it a try and see what happens.

Anyhow. I did the installation through my old OS since I didn't have a running DVD player at the time. I had no choice but to choose something else than C:, since my running OS was already using that partition and my new OS was going on a new disk. It seems a little strange that you won't get a really good installation if you're doing it that way instead of using a DVD or a USB installation. I never got a warning about using B: as the partition either. Seems strange as well.
Anyhow (again). I'm not sure if I want to make a clean installation right now, partly due to lack of time and partly because I'm not in the mood to redo all my installations of programs and redo their configurations...

So it seems lika I have to get used to the fact that some things don't work properly. And when I have the time I will make a clean installation. If things still doesn't work, I will ask again!

Thanks for all the help!

Britton30:

I will do that first then. I have done it partly, only thing I didn't do was to change the contact to the first one, but I have had all other disks disconnected a few times. i will try again and also move the disk to the first contact, but my guess is that it won't work then either. But I will give it a try! When I have the time ;)

If you want to wait to reintsall then besides running a few Startup Repairs to see if anything about the boot obviously needs repairing, you can gradually work through these other Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7 which may turn up clues and will give you much more familiarity with your Win7.
