hello all,

yesterday i made an mistake i can't figure out to repair again.

in the file assosiation protocol of windows i assosiated the .doc and .docx file with windows explorer, no not internet explorer, with WINDOWS EXPLORER

now i can't undo that
in the protocol list .doc and .doc files don't show up anymore

if i right click on a .doc file and try to the OPEN WITH thing, the " Always use the selected program...." field is grey,

wont let me save the assossiation...

can anyone in here help me solve this issue ?

thx in advance

Hello Nop, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Do you have Word from MS Office installed?

You could also set the default program to open these file extensions using Default Programs and selected the exe file of the program.

Hope this helps for now,
Shawn

thanks for the quick answer shawn.

and no, i only got the word viewer installed.
in this viewer there are really no options at all. i cant set any file assosiations in this program itself.
tried to assosiate .doc files with emeditor in the emeditor program itself, but nothing happens
the fileicon of the .doc files shows me the windows explorer icon...

perhaps i didn't explain it too clear, but as said in my first post:

since i assosiated the .DOC and .DOCX filytypes in "Associate a file type or protocol with a program"
in the DEFAULT PROGRAMS section, with explorer.exe
.doc and .docx filytypes don't show up anymore in the list of filetypes
can't assosiate these 2 filetyps with no program at all anymore
i need a registry workaround, i guess ??

proberbly filetypes assosiated with explorer.exe, will get system protected and don't show up anymore

The dialog "Always use the selected program...." in the OPEN WITH menue, is also grey,
i can open up the file with right click, open with....
but i want it to be saved forever ...

the thing is, when i now click on a .doc file, the mouse cursor is flashing because the system is opening up 10 or more explorers in a second till the computer crahes or i shut down the computer immidiatly.
the Process list in Task manager shows me an uncountable list of explorers...

i hope i explained my problem now better than before,

where in the registry i can change the explorer linked files ??
i have to delete .doc files from there i guess

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.doc\ ----> in here there is no explorer.exe , in no subcategory eighter
wordviewer is linked correctly, but doesn't work ????

sorry for my english ;)

but it's too early for me today

please help !

thx in advance,

Alex

do a system restore to before you changed the associations. then try setting "open with" word reader as default. you may have to browse to it

well, as i thought , there is no restore poit for this time..

anyone an other idea, registry workaround ? :sarc:

in DEFAULT PROGRAMS under WORD PAD i found the file ass. to .DOCX , which was stated there for WINDOWS EXPLORER, i could change this back to WORDPAD and now the file .DOCX shows up again in the file list ...
but the the .DOC file is still not there ..
perhaps it would show up if i install word...

cheers..

thx,

that might have helped
but i figured it out myself through editing some registry keys
i was really lucky it worked for me, cause I DID NOT really know what i was doing,
but i made a back up of the registry before... so

if someone wants to know what i did, i let you know, but i dont want to encourage someone to f*** up his registry...

thx for the help anyways,

cheers,

nop

i know this is the dirty version to get rid of this issuse..
i just copied the .DOCX pathes , which were working again after i could link them in the DEFAULT PROGRAMS section (3 posts above..)

and edited those .DOCX paths to .DOC ( just deleted the "X" from .DOCX)
i know, very dirty :o , but lucky me it worked :D

so, thx again.

SOLVED !
