I want videos stored on my D: drive to open in Media Player Classic, and videos stored on my E: drive to open in VLC Media Player.

I realize this probably isn't built into Windows, but I know there must be a way to do it.

Worst case scenario, a small program could be written to "direct traffic." When a video file is double-clicked, it would Open With this new utility program, and that program would launch either MPC or VLC and pass along the filename of the video to play. Unfortunately, I'm not skilled enough to code such a program...

As the program is associated with it's extension, and as they have same extension what you want isn't possible.

Copy a Media Player Classic link to the Videos folder on D: and VLC Media Player link to the Videos folder on C:
Modify the link properties where it says "start in" to the path of the videos on that drive. Execute the link (opens the media player) and then open - select the video.

I've found the answer. Directory Opus has this feature built-in: "@ifpath" - "For example, you could use this to open different programs when double-clicking on an image file, depending on where the file is stored. If the following command was added to the Left double-click event for the Images file type group, pictures located on the network will be opened in the Opus viewer when they are double-clicked, whereas files located on a local drive would open in Photoshop."
