Windows explorer has stopped working

check online--close

neither choice seems to make much difference. It seems that acknowledging the error a few times makes it go away until the next occurrence.

The error has been occurring with frequency the past several weeks.

Any suggestions to get at the root problem?

Maybe the OS has barfed - try this:
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html

Maybe an app is crashing it - try this:
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorial...ation-conflicts-performing-clean-startup.html

Maybe an infection was not caught by your AV tool - try this:
What is Windows Defender Offline?

If none of those find the cause, try the things mentioned in this post:

This seems to be a peculiar result of sfc /scannow:

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601]
Copyright (c) 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

C:\Users\Mark>sfc /scannow

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 19% complete.

Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.

It cannot be all that peculiar if Google returns 26k results with that as a phrase :-)

Let's move on to the WDO scan - then maybe someone else can help you with the SFC issue.

You know, I can't believe that Windows Defender is the answer unless for some really odd reason disabling it (which is what I did about 2 weeks ago) has a connection to system explorer.

I disabled WD since I run Norton 360 + Spybot and periodically Malwarebytes.

Windows Defender is the answer to what?
Why SFC was not completing or why explorer was crashing?

After the scan failed to complete, the next solution you provided was:

Let's move on to the WDO scan

and that link goes to Windows Defender

WDO does not equal WD

That is just stupidity on Microsoft's part for naming two vastly different products with close names like that.

WD on W7 "Windows Defender is your first line of defense against spyware and other unwanted software."
Windows Defender - Microsoft Windows
Think of it as MS's answer to Malwarebytes.

WDO is an anti-virus tool that looks for rootkits and other nasties while your operating system is not running; so all files can be inspected. Several antivirus companies make offline scanners because infections can hide from regular scanners.
