Solved Windows Failed to restart after updates

I have a lot of updates that are failing. Even if they succeed my computer fails to restart & runs in an endless loop restart- startup repair-unable to automatically repair this computer. I have to boot from the installation disc-format c drive-reinstall everything. Then, within a couple of weeks as the computer continues to update it starts all over again. I have tried to install one update at a time to see which update is causing this but have been unable to identify it. Right now I have updates turned off. I have just reinstalled everything all over again. I have an older computer with a lot of older programs on it. The computer will start in safe mode with networking so I know it isn't the default programs that are causing this. I have searched the web for solutions but nothing seems to work for long. Hope that you can resolve this with me. Thx

Hello and welcome Sheryl now to getsome details and to save you poking around inside themachine with torch etc use my ditty to get board CPU etc info.
Using HW Info
PART A:
You can test the volts on the PSU with HW Info HWiNFO, HWiNFO32/64 - Download < download the right bit version and close the right hand window select Sensors and scroll down to the power section where you will see what the volts are doing see my pic.
The original right hand window shows the machine running and is handy for that but for looking at the components in some detail close it and use the main left hand side panel
FOR OTHER COMPONENTS
PART B:
Open each small square with + in it on the section the components are in and then click on the individual component/s (it will highlight in blue) - in the right hand side will appear all sorts of details including brands speeds and other essential info that particular device. See pic for example.
Use PART B: and post back what you can.

Now another thing you can do are these scans
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/433-disk-check.html < if necessary include the /f and /r in the command line as per Option2

Plus you can do a clean up using CCleaner https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download before you clean go to Options and pick the cookies to save that use passwords for you. To do that highlight them and click the to the right hand list arrow.

You can use the Windows disk clean and use the Advanced tab to clear old updates.
Start> Computer > (right click on the C: drive) > Properties > Clean disk > Advanced > Clean system files it might take a little while if you have never done it but be patient.

Any queries please post back

I`ll bet something is wrong with the Windows 7 install dvd.

Where did it come from ?

Is it retail, did you buy it ?

Did you make it yourself ?

Are you positive the drive you are using is 100% healthy ?

How is windows activated ?

Crazy questions, but they all have a bearing on updates.

Good point mate didn't think of that, and would be interested to see some diagnostics in light of what you have said that HW Info would throw some light on that OS or even Speccy https://www.piriform.com/speccy Sheryl.

Now I am thinking also where did the machine come from as you mention it is an older one - maybe someone has taken you for a ride.

Hi! Thx for the reply's.

I bought the 7 disk at Walmart. I have had it for several years. The computer is about 6 years old & had XP on it, when my son had it. I upgraded it to Home 7 when he gave it to me.. It has worked fine until about a month ago when it started the Startup repair thing. The 7 is an authentic copy of windows. My son is fairly knowledgeable when it comes to computers. He said he thinks that I am downloading a corrupted update & that is what is the problem. I downloaded the HWIN... that you suggested. I am trying to run it but when I do the computer freezes. If I can get it run I will send the info that you requested. I did run the disk cleaner & I have CCleaner but haven't used it yet. I did use it before & it deleted some of my files. The hard drive is new. I replaced it before all this started & it worked fine.

Here is the link to the information that you requested. I have pasted the info to the page.

I ditched the AVG & downloaded Norton. I ran several different malware programs & there were some tracking cookies, but that's about it. I managed to get the HWIN... to run & saved a screenshot to my hard drive. I downloaded several updates & some failed to install. I went to MS site & reinstalled them & they were successful. Come on guys!!! I am going to be old and gray by the time I am able to get this machine running smoothly. :)

I have done multiple restores & the machine won't restore. It looks like it is going to but when it's finished nothing is restored & it goes back to the startup-failed to restart-windows cannot fix the machine automatically. My ex-husband says to keep running the startup repair multiple times until it works. Unfortunately both my ex & son live in another State & aren't here to actually be able to see what's up with this. :)

You can run SR til you`re blue in the face, if it doesn`t fix it after 3 tries, it never will.

Re install windows and be done with it.

And you should have had a disk image stored on your external for just such a problem :)

I have no idea why windows update is causing you problems, it never has for me and never should for you.

Do you have a good legitimate activation key ?

I have reinstalled multiple times. As windows continues to update it goes back to the same failed to start-startup repair-cannot repair automatically. This isn't the first time this has happened. I am reinstalling about 2-3 times a month now for the last couple of months. I have been to every forum & tried multiple solutions. I have a backup external drive that I use to reinstall everything. That is why I formatted the backup & then did a new backup while the computer is working. I appreciate your help but this is not a simple problem & there isn't any simple solution or it would be fixed by now. If you read the first post I made I detailed all this information. My computer is older but on the MS web site there are multiple post regarding this issue. Non have been resolved. I am worried that I will have to buy another computer & just dump this one. I do have a laptop that I am able to use to run my business but I want this one fixed if possible. But it is definitely not a situation where I can just reinstall & then 'be done with it'. & yes, I do have a legitimate copy of windows. I am not so poor that I can't afford to buy an authentic copy of the OS. I am insulted that you have asked me that multiple times as well as suggest that in a couple of your posts. I am not some teenage kid jerking around with the computer & downloading illegal copies of software. Thx

I did read your first post, I read all your posts, then give you my opinion.

In my opininon, this is a simple problem with a simple solution.

Good working Windows 7 install DVD
100 % healthy Properly functioning hard drive
and a 100% legitimate functioning activation key

Updates should not be causing any issues.

Don`t install Norton again either, only use MSE :)

Don`t install any software until you have run all rounds of windows update, let us know if there is any improvement.

Do the updates 10 to 15 at a time, re booting when windows tells you to.

Good Luck :D

At this time the computer is running very well. E is my external hard drive(passport-Ultra)that I use to backup. When the computer is running well I feel it is safe to backup. The machine will probably continue to run well until it updates again.
Computer failed to reboot after installing security update - Microsoft Community I tried this solution to & it didn't work for me either. It is very frustrating. I am not an expert by any means but I am able to follow instructions. MS believes that is an update but is having problems identifying which one. I am trying to do that too.

You might not hear from me for a couple of weeks or so. When (&if) it goes down again I am going to do as you say & not install any software until I do all the updates. I actually think that is a good idea. It might be an old program that is causing the problem...??? I will then install MSE. :)

The machine is running a lot better now that I have uninstalled the AVG. The Norton that I installed is provided free with my internet, CenturyLink seems to be working very well. I did an sfc scan & received the information that there are some corrupted files that cannot be fixed, but haven't investigated them yet. Too busy. I haven't had any updates due in a couple of days. Auto update is turned off. I am becoming optimistic as I'm not getting a lot of 'not responding' & freezes. :)

I`m tellin ya, Norton is garbage too, who cares if it`s free.

MSE is all you need.

You don`t use 2 different Anti Viruses, only one.

Please..... Listen to my advice :)

Microsoft Security Essentials - Microsoft Windows

Make sure Updates is set to inform you of updates, but let you choose whether to install them or not.

Then you look over each and every update to see if you want it, if you don`t need or want it, you right click and hide that update and you will never see it again.

Sheryl mate there is no need to get impatient we are doing our best and to my knowledge there is no such thing a s "free" Norton which is in itself rubbish

If you want something free take a pick for these
Probably the Best Free Security List in the World - Part I if you do not mind paying for a decent paid for then I use Kaspersky which costs me about $0.07 per day on a 3PC 2 years licence so virtually free Kaspersky Internet Security Free Download | 30-Day Trial | Kaspersky Lab AU try it an dump it if you like.

As for the installs why nit just use the info on the external/s and do them form what you can see you may be adding rubbish along with stuff you need ie I did a clone for my main desktop and it has taken over some stuff that was making the OS not work [roperly.

You seem to be quite capable if doing this stuff but you have to remember we have the disadvantage of not sitting in front of your machine and see exactly what happens when these things are tried so please as I said be patient - my own problem with the main desktop has been going since well before Christmas.

The alternative is to build your own machine from scratch.
