Solved Windows Failed to Start Status 0xc0000225 Help !

Dear all,

My system will not boot with the above error code displayed.

I need urgent help to recover if anyone can assist and indeed if it can be recovered.

History -

The PC was not shutting down for some time and was hanging on the shutting down screen before losing the output to the monitor but fans and lights still on.

Yesterday I cloned by SSD using Macrium Reflect and the outcome was successful - System booted and all was well. I did have to use diskpart.exe to expand the partition after the clone but it worked flawlessly.

This morning I booted and the error appeared to my shock and surprise.

I have updated the gigabyte BIOS from F4 to F10 - no change.

I have installed my windows disk and tried to boot from it to no avail.

Is there anything I can do to recover the system please ?

What exactly happens when you try to boot from the disc ? Any messages ?

Are you using the boot menu to choose the dvd drive ?

Check your connections to the new drive and your optical drive, may have knocked something loose.

Don't panic. Looks like others have had this issue as well.

I did a quick google search on your error code, and went to http://answers.microsoft.com. There seems to be multiple things that could be causing this, from BIOS options to anti-virus conflicts to ...

One of the Microsoft engineers response was
Restart your computer and tap on the F8 key until you reach the Advanced Boot Options menu and select Repair Your Computer. Select Startup Repair. If the repair option is not available on the Advanced Boot Options menu, start your computer from the Windows Recovery disc.

That is where I would start.

Hi All, Thanks for the replies.

When I boot up and try to boot from the DVD Drive, the screen just goes back to the error code. I have checked the drive and all cables present and intact.

If I do as the MS engineer says, F8 has no effect and the system error screen appears as if I had not been hitting F8.

As for starting from the windows recovery disk - I am guilty of not having one or being able to find it.

OK just did a series of restarts holding F8 down.

2 or 3 failed to boot at all and then I just booted as normal and the boot screen showed fix ME running up to 24%, following this the error code changed to 0xc0000002 - the boot selection failed because the required device was not availalbe.

Well well - I just created a system recovery disk in my windows 7 laptop and used it in the desktop and it fixed the problem.

Looks like a partition in my new SSD was the cause of the problem.

Thank you all - I am now back to my original problem of windows not shutting down.
