Windows Indexing is not Running

Hi am wondering if anyone can help me. After googling the internet for hours and trying loads of different solutions i still have not been able to fix my problem and so resorted to posting a new tread.

I am running Windows 7 64-bit and currently I am unable to search emails in outlook 2010 or files in explorer. After looking on the internet I have established that this is down to indexing on my computer however as much as I try I am unable to fix it. When going into indexing options there are no indexing locations available. The only thing i am really able to press is rebuild, which does nothing! And clicking troubleshoot just brings up and error saying troubleshooter was unable to fix or start indexing, great load of good that is!

I have been into windows features unchecked and checked the windows search and indexing services in all combinations however nothing has changed.

I have disabled the windows search service and deleted the temp files and data files for windows search then re-enabled it to no effect.

I have even reinstalled windows that did fix my problem for a short period however has now re-occured, all I can think is that its a windows update causing the problem or another thing im not sure of that could be the cause it that im using a RAID 1 mirroring system and this somehow is preventing the indexing from unning correctly.

I saw another thread where it seemed running defrag hosed indexing on RAID. By default defrag.exe is run at idle by the Task Scheduler. You could try disabling it and see if you can get indexing to happen.

Unfortunately that still hasn't changed anything or solved my problem however thanks for trying!

If the file system is NTFS in the interim you could use Everything Search.

I have used it for years. I disable indexing to save me from the system hogging the HD. Everything is lightning fast since it uses MFT info. That's why it only works for NTFS.

On your problem I can only think something in the RAID implementation can't be handled by Windows reliably. I've never had a RAID setup even in work so I have no experience with it.

Perhaps someone with RAID experience will lend a hand?

Thanks for your help, I don't have a problem with using another search service however it must be able to search my outlook emails. Will this everything search do this?

If you mean search the text in the mails or subject lines,no. It only searches file names. I'm not sure what would be a good search for outlook specifically. NirSoft has good free utilities. SeachMyFiles is a general purpose file name and contents search you might try.

I thought as much, my main issue really is that I cannot search emails with it being a work PC. Annoyingly Outlook doesn't have its own search function and it is linked with windows search and indexing. I personally think it must be a RAID issue but I cant understand why it has worked for years before! Like you say we need someone with more experience of RAID. Thanks Anyway.

I believe you can use Thunderbird to access outlook via pop3 or imap. You may have to download the messages before you can search them. I'm not sure. I don't have Thunderbird set up as I don't have an ISP. Just WiFi. A couple of years ago I set it up for my hotmail so I could download my mail and back it up. It may be worth a look.
