I know the Windows is preparing your desktop is an old and common problem but I've never solved it and wind up justretreiving a backup. The error could be installing a backup to a like motherboard where
compatibility should be less of an issue.

I did try the repair disk and reinstalling FixBoot and FixMBR. Is there a specific remedy I have
missed?

Thanks for answering. Here, new install probalbly mens in my case that I moved the HD to boot
from on MSI motherboard to another-- similar but not the same. When it hangs like that I never can trace
what I did. After all, it loads Windows up that point then provides no error message.

What I'm doing now is sorting the HD + backup HD for each machine and on the backup HD
reinstalling everything from low level format through windows install to a fresh clone job.

I see no other answer and I have one leg of this old procedure completed.

With all this lack of proper error messages (don't tell me 0000x is an error message ;-) )
a three deep redundancy will be my goal. I had one marked 'dead' when it wasn't-- just
no error report about 'you hooked it up wrong.'

One other strange thing to report I had never seen before:

To get my low level started I once tried the 'quick wipe' option in HDD Guru Low Level which is a

trusted product and the same version that has been out for a long time.

The Norton did not like a quick wipe. Trying to copy to it slowed down to 12 kb.sec or something
and showed 300 hours to complete. The process running was the initial NTFS read. A real scrambled egg.

So then I redid it the long way.

I should and will ask about that at HDD Guru.

So you took a drive from one computer and are trying to boot on another computer.
- Is it the same hardware, specially AMD x Intel?
- Is BIOS configured the same way? If one is Raid and the other is AHCI it won't boot.

I will mark this solved. You just _can't_ , with any reliability, swap a bootable HD even between two motherboards from the same mfg. There is a workaround I've used but with one source for my

data it's pretty sensitive to do. The point on that is: I didn't think I needed to do the workaround maneuver. My head was just spinning.

In that disk wipe question, I did ask about quick wipe at HDD Guru. I completed the ask but
even though I thought I put the NTFS on it-- the scrambled response from Norton Ghost is
likely my error. My face will be red at HDD Guru. :-/

Asking for more portability from an older Win7 OS is just too much to ask M$. Or error messages that
do not have to be deciphered by a paid repair man. Jump up to Win10 it's no better, just more Clarissa or whatever it's called. There should be some form of _hardening_ at the MBR level.
