Hi,

I'm still showing the 1.1mb update :p

It's going to be the same WLE2011 installer that you can get from the MSN website which allows you to select which apps to install or install all apps.

You should be offered two choices: Upgrading all currently-installed Windows Live Essentials apps or choosing which Windows Live Essentials 2011 applications you wish to install/upgrade.

Of interest by the Microsoft Update Product Team, Windows Live Essentials on Microsoft Update :
Windows Live Essentials 2011 will be offered as a Recommended Update for users who have any one of the Windows Live software products installed, otherwise it will be offered as an Optional Update. If you have configured your computer to automatically download Recommended Updates then it will download automatically. After download is complete, WU will notify you of available updates, and you can start the upgrade. It will not install automatically.

I have downloaded it, tweaked it and with all the hype abou it being so nice n' tidy I have to say from my own daily use of WL-Mail and WL-Messenger 2011 is a major disappointment. I did a system restore and then visited windows updates to hide the 2011 update/upgrade.

Why did I not like it? Because I don't use Microsoft Office 2007/2010 and WLE 2011 has implemented a UI that looks like Office 2010 Menu Bar/Toolbar. I know a lot of people who have Office will like this---it will be familiar. For me, there is way, way too many buttons on the Menu Bar. Yes I know you can minimize it but to make it look as streamlined as version 2010 (see screenie of my WL-Mail Menu Bar) you simply cannot. Or I couldn't find a simpler choice for it...

I was happy to find this thread, because this update has been nagging me for days. Unfortunately my experience is not the same as has been described here. The update had already been downloaded, and when I clicked on install the whole thing apparently is installing. It's been processing for ten minutes so far, with not much sign of nearing completion.

There is only one program I'm remotely interested in in the update, so this whole episode has been a royal annoyance. And if I roll back to the restore point the whole process will probably begin again. And my effort to turn off this update at Windows Update only took me back to the local update notification. Evidently there's no way to turn the thing off.

After fifteen minutes of waiting, I just killed the installation and will roll back to a restore point. Thanks, MS. /s

Ok, I'm back to my restore point. And I'm also back to MS nagging me to install this update. Going to the web updater only tells me to go back to my Control Panel, and there there is no way to turn off an update. This is an unnecessary and ridiculous annoyance.

Ok, I'm halfway there. I separated Recommended from Critical updates, so presumably I won't be nagged. But there still isn't any way to hide this monstrosity.

On the Control Panel Update page, everyone needs to click the "?" icon and use the Help facility to send feedback to MS asking for a way to hide unwanted optional updates.

1/ for me, it seemed to download the entire 160MB download (judging by the amount to time it was downloading), but gave me the option to install all programs or just update installed apps (windows live messenger)

2/ cant you right click on the update and select hide this update to stop being 'nagged'?

Yes - thank you very much. I had no idea that function was hiding in a context menu. I'm used to the Web Update interface. And now I've set Update to Notify only, so there'll be no unwanted downloads.

Here's a little more information, pertinent to PussPa and maybe Tatky. If you go to Windows Live Mesh 2011 and download the installer there, it does indeed give you the opportunity to select which components to install. My guess is that that is an older version of the installer.

Tatky, using this, maybe you could update the elements you want, if the error lies in the install of an unwanted element (to find that out, run the initial installation and view Details).

I would strongly suggest backing up your mail first (if it's not in an IMAP account), but I just opened Live Mail for the first time to find no listed way to do so (maybe because my account is IMAP? But then, it's not listed in Help either).

Paul. Restore your system then immediately go to Windows Updates. Right click on Windows Live Essentials and choose "Hide". Hopefully those of us who don't care for all the navigation buttons and other tabs etc. on the toolbar can keep our steamlined Windows Live Mail for months or years to come. Hopefully M$ will read these posts and give us all the option of hiding all the buttons so we can have a nice clean toolbar as shown in my previous post.

Niceget - thanks for the advice. So the issue is the Ribbon? After all this, I decided I wanted to try Mesh. Then I looked into which LE items were already on the machine, and most of them were. So finally I capitulated and installed the update, even after I had learned how to Hide it. I don't use Live Mail, but I've played with it now. It seems endearing, but the ribbon is an absolutely horrendous waste of space. It is the epitome of dumbed-down stepping backward in interface design. (This is why I think Office '03 is the best version.)
