Microsoft kicked off the month of May by announcing that they are discontinuing the Windows Live brand, saying the Windows Live apps and services were built on versions of Windows that weren’t designed to connect to a cloud service and citing customer confusion. They released a chart showing the transition process for many of the current services.

This seems to be further confirmation of Microsoft’s “all in” commitment to the cloud, but had some folks worried that we’re going to lose some of our most useful applications, such as Windows Live Writer. A petition sprang up to beg Microsoft not to kill it.

A tweet from Chris Jones (Windows Live VP) on May 3 seems to lay those fears to rest, saying: “all desktop apps work great and are supported on Windows 8, including WL Writer.”

I would have thought someone at Microsoft might have considered these points before forcing the whole world to accept Live Mail, a very poor substitute for Outlook Express - and not very well thought through in respect of useability

I am personally not too worried about it. I still have Skype and Facebook to use as an alternative instant messenger, not to mention texting. But, are they discontinuing development or the entire service?

What about Microsoft Live essentials security? That's all I have to protect my computer.

I have never relied on Microsoft's idea of security:
AVG is a free and very effective anti-virus program - make sure its the free version not the trial
Comodo is a free and very effective firewall - again make sure you download the free version not a trial
Sandboxie is a free and very effective sandbox - running your programmes from inside it stops all sorts of bugs, virus and trojans escaping into your hard drive. When the computer is closed down the sandbox and everything in it is erased... except cookies which can be erased from the temp folder quite easily.
Malwarebytes is a handy program too - which I use to scan anything I have downloaded before installing it. although AVG can do the same thing, I am reliably informed professionals prefer Malwarebytes for efficiency.

It's only a branding issue - MS is changing the name from Windows Live Essentials to Windows Essentials. The programs remain - only the name changes
--> Window Live Essentials Mail becomes Windows Essentials Mail

Of course Win8 changes everything WE Mail becomes MailApp. Even that might have changed ;)

Sorry for my very delayed reply.
