Windows Live Mail 2011 Privacy Issue

What I'm trying to say is:

1) When you use email clients like thunderbird or outlook, say you have a gmail account, then those clients usually coordinate with that gmail account and stores a copy of the emails on your computer aswell as on the gmail server,

2) however I'm worried that by using that gmail account in WLM 2011, a copy of all my emails on that gmail account (server) may be stored on an MS server? Is that possible, and all the complaints I hear about WLM Web-Based?

Yes when you choose the option to leave on server after downloading.

If you are using windows live mail 2011 no it won't. WLM 2011 is a stand alone programme on your computer it is not web based

That article was written a year ago and is full of errors. Windows Live Mail has two components.
1) The client program you download from Windows Live Essentials and can have multiple mail accounts and stores everything on your PC.
2) There is also a cloud component which is accessed with a Windows Live ID and requires you to sign up for the ID. After that to use it you need to sign in to the cloud component. By signing in you receive some additional features.

If you do not have an ID or do not sign in then everything stays on you PC and nothing is sent to MS.

Please read the link phone man posted you do not have to use windows live ID to use windows live mail.You can use WLM 2011 without it. If you are that paranoid about using WLM then use another email programme there are plenty out there. I use wlm 2011 it downloads straight from my server to my pc I never have to sign in because I don't have a windows live ID

sorry lol, i didn't mean to annoy you guys, i personally like wlm 2011, that's why I was asking these questions to make sure it is safe, sometimes you have private data that you just don't want other servers to use, like for example your university mail account however having a mail client makes life a lot easy, you don't have to keep logging in and logging out all the time from internet (especially when you have multiple emails), and personally i liked the look of wlm 2011 although currently I use thunderbird.

Hello folks -

If I may make a slight turn on this subject, could use some insight.

*I have a week old laptop and configured WLM and all (from what I can tell) has been good. (this is a second machine and it appears all the e-mails have downloaded for the accounts I have configured - in comparing it to my Vista with Outlook.

*Recently (2 days ago?), there was an update (with choices - I am new at this and do not like many choices) to update to WLM 2011 which I did.

*The install was together with another install and both failed. I was told to try them separately but only one was available - which installed fine. I thought that WLM 2011 only showed failed because both failed.

*WLM2011 seemed to be fine; all the features changed etc - I can see it is different.

*Last night I received e-mails on the Vista w/ Outlook, but not delivered on WLM and as of this morning, they havestill not been delivered to WLM2011

*I just tested all the emails and all were sent and received as should be.

I am baffled.

OK - may have solved the mystery (or a new mystery has been created!)

I checked all the settings on the Vista Outlook (as I keep mail on the server for a limited # of days) and the accounts in question, had not been checked (which may have when I made another adjustment there and a simple coincidence).

I'll keep an eye - sure wish I figured it out last night - would have slept better

EDIT - Actually had another thought on this - if the accounts were not set to save e-mail on the server (in Outlook), why did they download again to Outlook after already downloading to WML2011 - are those type settings pertinent to the email client only?

In WLM2011, under the Accounts tab, I cannot click on the 'Properties' button - I can only right click with options to 'Add to Quick Access Toolbar' or 'Show Quick Access Toolbar Below the Ribbon'. So I am not certain how to check the account settings in WLM2011 -

Alrighty then, I have now figured that out - seemed a little complicated - I guess until you know you have to highlight the account first before looking at the properties!

Give WLM a go it works. Just don't use windows live ID and you will be fine. Sometines we can read to much.

You would be fine if you even connect it to your Live account. The desktop client does not move anything onto any server but the server the account is associated with. A Gmail account would be on Goggle's servers, Yahoo Mail on Yahoo server, Hotmail on Microsoft servers. It does not do anything unexpected or anything that would compromise privacy.

To make it clear. The desktop client does not move anything to any server but the original server the email came from. Regardless if you link it with your Windows Live ID.

This is an old article and he is WRONG. Don't know what he was smoking but he does not understand Windows Live Mail. As I stated before there is a Cloud Component but requires you to login to use it. I have not looked at setting up the cloud component as I don't need it so don't know exactly what is involved and how it functions.

First you have to click on the Account you want and then the Properties button will work, or you can right click on the Account you want and select properties. If that account is setup as a POP3 account then under the Advanced tab there is an option to leave a copy on the server.

Except that if you "sign-in" you will be using your "signed-in" contact list which is duplicated at the contacts.live.com website.
