I would imagine any change in office outlook would depend on what servers you're using,
I use hostmonster so I doubt I'll see any changes especially since I do not connect in any way to outlook.com.

I agree, you should be ok.
I have MS email accounts and use the MS IMAP servers and Office Outlook connector.
I think i'll get hit with changes, for Outlook 2010 and WLM 2012

Well I'm a bit confused. Any response to these questions would be very useful.
1) I'm running LiveMail 2011 (not 2012). I also don't have Outlook. Should I run the patch?
2) If I try out Thunderbird can I run both it and LiveMail?
3) How would I transfer/copy my LiveMail content to Thunderbird?

Ideally I'd like to have Thunderbird mirroring LiveMail so if LiveMail bites the dust I'm ok. Tricky questions but any comments would be helpful.

You should not need the patch if you are not using one of the Microsoft email systems mentioned in the email. As for running live mail and thunderbird in parallel, that is not only possible but good practice, this is simple if you can use the IMAP protocol as this is designed to sync between multiple clients. The transfer is quite straightforward you save the mails to eml format from live mail and import into thunderbird

If you are still limited to pop3 then it can be done by setting one client as master and one as a read only and set to leave mails on the server you would use the master day to day and just update the read only as required based on your usage.

2) I can use both Thunderbird and WLM on the same OS without issues or conflicts.
3) I only use these Email clients on my test box, and with email accounts where i don't need to keep any emails.
So i never transferred from WLM to Thunderbird.
I use IMAP and never needed to transfer, emails show up in both client programs, no problem.
If you use POP you might need to transfer saved emails.

I also don't have Outlook

Outlook has so many different meanings now, that makes it more confusing, such as
Office Outlook client program, Outlook.com email address, Outlook web site, ...

I am reliant on Hotmail as my email address.

imho, This whole change is confusing for who needs to do what and when.

Log in to your Hotmail account with Outlook web mail and see if it shows Outlook COM or Outlook Live (preview) in the upper left corner.

If you see Outlook Live (preview), that account has been converted.

My problem is my Outlook.com email address has been converted, but my Hotmail accounts have not been converted.
So i have a mix of converted and not converted MS email accounts.
I had issues with WLM 2012, applied the patch and still had issues.
I uninstalled WLM 2012, reinstalled it, and things work better for me (without the patch).

I got no email telling me my account was converted, so the only way i know is to log into web mail and see what it shows.

I have several email accounts 2 of which are Microsoft ones. I have a Hotmail one and an Outlook one, also Gmail and 3 that are tied to my ISP.

I have a list under the Storage Folders tab that contains different sub folders for things and have message rules set to sent emails to their own folder. In WLM at the bottom of the account list are the icons for Mail, Calendar, Contacts, RSS and Newsgroups. I use the RSS Feeds button a lot and have several in the list.

I like this set up and it's easy to go from one place to another.

As I have Office 365 I thought I'd try out Outlook, I think it's trying to do too much. OK got my emails set up but getting my RSS Feeds was a different matter and it's lumped them all in the Hotmail folder, I'm not happy. Stopped using it and went back to WLM 2012, I've not tried the built in Mail app in 10 so don't know what that's like.

I never read email through my browser and don't want to start. @Nigel does Thunderbird do RSS Feeds ?

It's not something I use anymore but Thunderbird still fully supports RSS feeds, allowing you to sort and ,I Assume, treat them as any other local folder, rule based sorts Etc

I have some more questions:
1) People are talking about WLM 2012 yet I continue to use WLM 2011. Should I have upgraded.
2) When I export my email I get a bunch of .eml files except they appear to be randomly ordered not time/date ordered.
3) Is it worth dumping WLM and moving to Outlook? I'm running Windows 7 on multiple PCs and don't want to be forced into Windows 10 in the near future and am not sure I can upgrade my Office Suite to include Outlook and run on Windows 7.

I saw that thread and right now i think it's difficult to know what to do for client email.
The WLM/Outlook changes, Thunderbird uncertainty, etc.

I found Thunderbird email has a portable version, i'm testing it now.
So you can test drive Thunderbird without installing it and see what you think.
I haven't used Thunderbird in a long time, so i'm relearning the configuration, options, etc.
There are a lot of options, so there is a learning curve to using it, a LOT more options than WLM.
So far it's working great for me.

I use WLM, Thunderbird, etc. on my multi-boot test box, so a portable version is better for me (i only have to maintain 1 instance of a program for all OS's)
My email use on my test box is simple - receive and send email reliably.
I don't need a Calender, to "save" emails, etc.

Hopefully someone will pick up Thunderbird and continue support if Mozilla abandons it.
If not, i don't really care if there are no new versions/features, i use many "old" programs because they work for me and often prefer them to a "newer version".
I only care if a security problem is discovered and won't be fixed, or i run into a show-stopper bug that won't be fixed.

Some of the security holes are from using share stuff on websites
I've personally never have used the silly website features and usually spam or junk anything any one might send me doing them

Home & Student 2007 - 3 PC license. It didn't come with Outlook.

I still am using it only for newsgroups, nothing else. :-( Wish I could find a good (free) newsgroup reader and I could uninstall 2012 live mail.
