Solved Windows Live Mail can't communicate with Windows 7 file directory

I think this is a Windows problem rather than a Windows Live Mail problem. For no apparent reason, I could no longer save or open email attachments. No error messages, just nothing happens. I opened up all of the mail security and nothing changed. Then I found that doing something like importing or exporting contacts, mail, etc or changing storage locations acts the same.

I did a clean removal of Win Live and re-installed it. Nothing changed. Any suggestions other than a new Win 7 install?

Took the "easy" way out

Thanks for some very fine technical pointers.. -- much more than I usually find. I tried the system file checker but couldn't find a way to open the log file to see if I was making any progress, I found other issues and decided it was time to do a clean install which I did. I have a pretty good data backup but am still re-loading applications.

I have McAfee and SuperAntiSpyWare running all the time but something got through. I think I'll regularly run the file checker just as a precaution.

Thanks again.

Magician this is completely up to you but whenever I do an install or make slight changes to the registry I always back up it first is a really good safety net.
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/4230-registry-backup-restore.html

and if you ant to get a little more out of the machine this is the bible:)
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/11728-optimize-windows-7-a.html it also has registry changes but it is very safe being written by a real genius.

Those other free scans are worth keeping too mate especially Malwarebytes and ADW - there are more and if you get into strife you only have too post in here for other stuff you can use.

I know one should never run two real time AV's at the same time so personally if it were me I would run the free SAS and just leave your McAfee to it's own devices as some of the problem's may have been due to them conflicting.
However I am not a great fan of McAfee but if you are then all's well.

Thanks. I always trust advice from a fellow biker. I didn't mean to say I have both anti-virus' running at the same time. McAfee is the full-time firewall and virus protection but I run Anti Spy Ware regularly to see what it can find. Used to use Malwarebytes. Maybe I should go back to it. Windows 7 and McAfee do seem to have conflicts (always messing with my Homegroup and file sharing) but I get it free with my AT&T Uverse. I'm a heavy computer user (email, writing and editing, financial spreadsheets, data searches, software development, occasional gaming) and I get very frustrated with the performance of Windows and the applications within it. Most frustrating is the apparent lack of straight-forward technical info on the web. It all seems to come from novices who have found a "solution" by trial and error with no solid roots in the structure of the actual application. All the best, Mate. California Magician

Sounds very much like my sort of usage I reckon the Malwarebytes is worth keeping on board I have the paid for version running real time on my laptop and Ivy Bridge and it is about the only real time that my Kaspersky will not conflict with. The ADW mate is real good at rooting stuff out of the registry and another one I give a bit of a trot out when necessary and link others to is this Emsisoft Free Emergency Kit: Portable malware scanner | Free removal of Viruses, Bots, Spyware, Keyloggers and Trojans I only use the Emergency and Command line scan and if really stuck this one will run from power up so it does involve booting the OS is this one Download Kaspersky Rescue Disk 10 and if you are worried about rootkits then there these Best Free Rootkit Scanner and Remover the TDSS Killer is usually effective enough.

Having ranted on about this I would seriously consider another AV mate as I think I said before I am not a fan of McAfee or Norton, AVG or MSE for that matter but it is a personal choice issue. I have had Kaspersky on my five machines now and never have had any problems and it is relatively cheap - for me about $0.13 a day.

If you are looking for a free AV then this is a good link http://www.techsupportalert.com/content/probably-best-free-security-list-world.htm go to page 2 for the real time stuff but as you will see tons of stuff. This is an excellent site all over:)

A bit off topic my biking days are over after wrecking my shoulder gold prospecting and also my woodworking days are also over so being interested in electronics all my life computing fits a very nice bill.
Pic of me and the Big Girl taken in better days you can see I am a small bloke and the 365 kilos (dry) was a real handful. ('98 Yamaha Virago Special 1100cc) She was fully kitted out (radio sidebags top box bar warmers and a few electronic gadgets that for example told me re the battery condition / charge) - for long trips and so comfortable and for a heavy bike surprisingly quick. The only drawback - a small tank just 200 kilometres before it needed a drink (like I used to LOL!!)

Ah well blathered on so
Stay upright!!
