When trying to email a particular address (that is in my address book),either by using a fresh email or replying to one received from the same address, I get the following message from '[email protected]'

This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification.
Unable to deliver message to following recipient, because the message was forwarded more than the maximum allowed times. This could indicate a mail loop.

It is the first time I have come across this problem. What is a mail loop and how do I resolve it ?.

Hello Nero mate the address is it one that you use a lot or is it an annoying one? The loop I don't know but if it is one that is not wanted then I would block it using the Options > Safety options > Blocked senders.

thanks for your response. It's a new address to a Solicitors office. Have recently replied to emails from them with attachments, with no problem. Suddenly the last time I tried to reply to a message from them, this is what happened. Can not remember doing anything out of the ordinary that might have caused it. Would like to correspond via email with this address in the future, if possible.

Do you have your WLM set up to forward your email to another account (Gmail for instance)? Does the message indicate a Status: 4.4.6?

Numeric Code: 4.4.6

Possible Cause: The max hop count was exceeded for the message. This code may also occur if a loop situation exists between a sending server and a receiving server that are not in the same organization. In this scenario, the message bounces back and forth until the hop count is exceeded.

An email loop is an infinite loop phenomenon, resulting from mail servers, scripts, or email clients that generate automatic replies or responses. If one such automatic response triggers another automatic response on the other side, an email loop is created. The process can continue until one mailbox is full or reaches its mail sending limit. In theory, the email loop could last indefinitely. Email loops may be caused accidentally or maliciously, causing denial of service. Although rare, email loops involving more than two participants can also occur.

Email loop - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

You can view the emails header, and it will show the path of this loop usually

Open the e-mail message> Click the three dots icon (...) beside Categories> Choose View message source on the drop down menu> A new window will open showing e-mail headers

You will see something like this (pulled from the web as an example)

Original message headers:

If you are an individual mail user, and this only happens at this one address, it is likely an issue with the recipients email server. Since you had successfully emailed them in the past, it's likely an issue on their end. If you have a web based email like Gmail, or Outlook.com, etc. You might try that and see if you get the same result.

A Guy

As Guy says it could be a problem at their end I misunderstood the original post - sorry!

It did occur to me though also as Guy suggests (I think) that as you are using Windows Live Mail why not try making another account say with Hotmail and use this account just for this one office you are trying to communicate with?
