Ok, I have my new Windows 7 Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop, but I have a problem.

Ok, while I was downloading programs such as Yahoo Messenger and AIM, I realized Windows Live Messenger was already on here...meaning I didn't have to download it.

But what I find weird is, there is no shortcut folder in the start menu...furthermore, this program doesn't show up AT ALL in my notification area on the lower right of my screen...however it does show Yahoo Messenger...and AIM...and even on my other laptop, which is identical to this one except it runs Windows Vista, Windows Live Messenger DOES show up in the notification area...so why is it not showing up here?

I find this EXTREMELY weird, unless when it was being pre-installed someone shows to not show it in the notification area or something (supposing that's even possible).

Also if someone is going to say, customize the notification area, IT DOESN'T EVEN SHOW WINDOWS LIVE AS AN OPTION...whereas it shows Yahoo and AIM, and I am able to hide those icons and so on. Windows Live does not even show up AT ALL...how weird is that?!

What if you made it run at start up?

I thought maybe I could un-install then re-install it, but figuring out is hard, since in the programs list in the control panel, I see Windows Live Essentials, Windows Live Sign-in Assistant, Windows Live Sync, and Windows Live Upload Tool...as you can see it's not as easy as un-installing one thing, and one of those may be important for something else...

And what difference will that make? I guess I'll try it..

Nevermind I just tried that and it doesn't put it in the notification area, If you go here http://download.live.com/ and hit the download button, when it comes up it will tell you what is already installed and the other programs you can install.
That should tell you if you have it or not.

That's not really my question...my question is HOW do I uninstall it then re-install it, not to know what I already have installed. I know I have Windows Live, otherwise I wouldn't be complaining it doesn't show up in the notif. area.

And YOU have the same problem? I guess it's something normal. Whatever.

derekimo, I just got rid of WLM on a new Windows 7 laptop by using the method outlined in your link. The laptop belongs to a friend and he asked me to get rid of it. I thought it would be easy like uninstalling Windows Messenger in XP. I'm new to Windows 7 Forums and I can see it's the right place to be. Thanks for the link.

You're Welcome,
Sorry but maybe I'm not understanding exactly what it is you are trying to do.
If you could explain a little more I'm sure we'll find a solution or reason why not.

Sorry to be a bit off topic, but I had to seize the opportunity. Do you know if there's a x64 version of Windows Live Messenger?

From what I could find out, The answer is no. Mine is in the x86 programs folder but runs fine on my x64 system if that's what you wanted to know.

The notification area, on the lower right hand corner of the screen. You can decide whether or not to show things like internet connection, wireless connection, or whatever program like AIM, Yahoo, Dell Camera Software etc. it's next to where the time is.

The problem is, on windows 7, Windows Live Messenger is not even a thing you can show or hide. It NEVER shows up there, for some reason. On Vista, when you are signed off, it still shows in the notif. area as a little green mad with a red X. On Windows 7, whether you are signed on or off, or whether or not the program is even open it does not show up.

That was the problem, but I barely care now.

Also I hardly see the benefit of 64 bit programs or a 64 bit system even, and am confused as to why some programs are labeled x86 instead of just x32 to indicate it's a 32-bit software. How strange and misleading...

A lot of people claim there are 64 bit version of programs, but a lot of them turn out to be fake for instance the other day I was trying to download a 64 bit version of Video LAN (the thing that plays ANY video file :D) and it was bogus and didn't work. I like downloading from the official sites, even when they're not 64-bit for my 64-bit operating system, and I don't see what difference it would make even. I read it would be more efficient, but I don't think it would be that noticeable.

Yeah I know what you meant, it doesn't show in the notification area, I just put a shortcut on the taskbar and that way I can access it or show if I'm signed in or not.

Yeah you see that's the only place it will show up in, but I like to keep my taskbar clean of everything so I can see that transparent-ness that is so cool. :)

At first, I thought it had to do with Windows Live being pre-installed so I un-installed then re-installed, but it had nothing to do with that. Windows Live just decides not to show up and/or Windows 7 doesn't think it's important enough lol.

Talking about WLM, would any of you know where I can find the Windows Live Messenger plug-in for x64 Windows Media Player 12? I'd like to have the 'Show what I'm listening to' option functional once again without having to use the x86 WMP12. Thanks in advance.
