I aldready posted this elsewhere on the forums, but then noticed that topic was located it was in the Tutorials section. Since it's pretty urgent to me I also created this topic.

Recently I upgraded from Win7 x86 to x64 (professional), but I can't get Windows Mail to work. I got a copy of a working 64bit version (from another computer) of Windows Mail but it won't work on my system, giving this error: 0x8007000E. I Googled it dozens of times but can't get to a solution, most of the results are related to Vista, 32bit and/or other software applications.

My housemate also has a Win7 64bit system, so I already tried copying my Windows Mail to his computer to see if it's corrupt or something alike, but it's not. It totally works on his computer.

Somewhere I found the solution of locating another MSOERES.dll elsewhere on the computer (C:\Windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows-m..-core-dll.resources_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16385_en-us_2cea88b0c19dd22e) and placing it in the Windows Mail folder. I was very happy to see it actually launched the application, BUT.. There are no icons whatsoever and some text styling isn't correct:

windowsmail.jpg

I copied the whole Windows Mail folder again, placed it on my mate's computer, but with the same result. So this is probably due to MSOERES.dll. But with using the one that SHOULD work, I get the 0x8007000E error.

Does anyone have an idea about how to solve this? I really want it to work the way it should 'cause I know it's possible, as I copied Windows Mail from a working Windows 7 64bit system which also works correctly on my mate's PC. I really want it to work..

P.S.
I already recovered a backup of a clean installation of Windows 7 but still it wouldn't work. I haven't tried completely reinstalling Windows 'cause it seems pretty useless, since it also didn't work on my clean install..

Can you tell us how you got Windows Mial on Windows 7? According to this Windows Mail isn't included with Windows 7 - Looking for Windows Mail? You'll have to use Windows Live Mail.

I know I don't have Windows Mail on my system, I do however have Live Mail, though I don't use it.

Am I missing something?

Actaully why can't you just use Live Mail? Doing the hack and crack thing with Windows Mail isn't going to work too well as you've seen.

I don't think it necessarily has to do something with the tutorial or any of the actions described in it, since my Windows Mail works flawlessly on at least two other systems but to me gives the 0x8007000E error. But yes, I already posted my issues there too.

Well good luck, unfortunately I have no other answers as I don't use the hack.

Good luck.

Too bad, but thanks for your input anyway!

I do have an update though. One of my friends bought practically the same PC as me a year ago (except for the case). Now he does have a different GPU, extra memory and a SSD disk, but still the same motherboard and CPU as me. He also runs Windows 7 64bit. I sent him my Windows Mail folder and he got exactly the same errors and malfunctions as I did. So as strange as it sounds it pretty much is going to look like a hardware related problem rather than a software related one.

So.. Just for the record. I got my copy of Windows Mail from a Dell Inspiron 15 (or something alike) with an Intel dual core 2.0GHz processor (where it works flawlessly). My housemate runs an Intel 2500K on a Gigabyte motherboard and it worked flawlessly. Me and my friend though are running an AMD Phenom II X4 955 on a MSI 870a-G54 motherboard, and it fails with the same errors. All the systems tested run Windows 7 64bit.

Sorry but hardware isn't going to affect a Windows mail software like what you're getting. In short I'm 99.9 percent this isn't a hardware issue, the other .001 percent being that anyhing is possible, but....

Anyway what I do suggest you do is follow the tutorial to the letter and get the required files from the source listed in the tutorial as opposed to copying files from a another Dell computer with Windows 7 on it, since we already know Windows Mail isn't supported on Windows 7.

So.. Just for the record. I got my copy of Windows Mail from a Dell Inspiron 15 (or something alike) with an Intel dual core 2.0GHz processor (where it works flawlessly).

My two cents.

I will follow the tutorial from start to end, but still I'm pretty sure there's nothing wrong with Windows Mail as it resides on my computer, since it works on at least two other systems. I agree it shouldn't or even couldn't be a hardware related issue, but it is rather strange that the software fails on two out of four computers where the failing ones are running almost the same hardware. I'll see if I can test it on several more systems.

But as for now I'll get back to that tutorial even though I have my doubts in solving it. But there's no harm in trying ofcourse.

Edit:
As expected, it didn't work. Also, the registry key as written in this step does not exist on my system:
2. Manually edit the following registry key if it is installed.

  • Start Menu ==> All Programs ==> Accessories ==> Run ==> Type: Regedit ==> OK
  • Go to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER ==> Software ==> Classes ==> eml_auto_file ==> shell ==> open ==> command
  • Double click: Default (in right pane) ==> Value Data ==> Completely replace by copying and pasting the following exactly as shown:
  • "C:\Program Files\Windows Mail\winmail.exe" /eml:%1

I don't know if that would even make a difference.

Well bear in mind that this is a hack job you're talking about so nothing is guaranteed; also note that there have been many updates to Windows 7, including the release of SP1 since that tutorial was written.

Just something to consider. And again, why not Windows Live?

Edit: The key word is "if"......

"2. Manually edit the following registry key if it is installed."

Anyway like I said, that tut was written before a lot of changes were made to 7. BTW Do you have SP1 installed?

Again, all your concerns really should be addressed in that tutorial post as the author is really in the best position to answer your questions/concerns.

Good luck.

Yeah, I noticed the "if". So don't know if that would be an important step.
I do have SP1 installed. I believe all the systems tested have it.

The reason I prefer Windows Mail is just because I'm used to it, I love how simple and lightweight it is and it gives me a better feel than Windows Live Mail. I'm pretty conservative when it comes to such software (also like Windows Live Messenger). Windows Mail does exactly what I expect from a good e-mail client and the interface of Windows Live Mail reminds me too much of webbased email like Hotmail. I also want it to work just because I can't stand it if I spent such an amount of money on a computer and some little piece of software fails to work, where it is compatible with 64 bits and works on other Windows 7 systems. It's just a matter of copy/paste from a Windows Vista machine to a Windows 7 machine.. I just want to solve it.

I'll see if I can contact the author of the tutorial and see if he can help me solve this.

Edit:
It seems that I don't have the privileges to message him, or anyone at all..

I finally "solved" it.. It, of course, was my own fault that it wouldn't work. Basically what went wrong is that I thought WinMail.exe didn't exist on a Windows 7 machine and therefore the first thing I did was getting my hands on a Windows Vista x64 Windows Mail, and copied it to Program Files. Of course I backupped the original Windows Mail folder that came with Windows 7, but this means that I didn't execute the tutorial on the right folder so of course it wouldn't work. So I recovered the initial Windows Mail folder, made WinMail.exe visible, replaced the msoe.dll (which I already had since I downloaded tons of dlls) and it worked. So 2.5 days of work is the price I paid for thinking way too difficult and being a smartass. :)

But still, thank you for your input, sygnus21.
