Windows Media Player won't rip CD's

Media player won't rip CD's. When you go to options, Rip Music, there is no default location shown for the file. When you click "Channge Location", nothing happens. So I can't rip CD's in my version of Windows 7.

Would Windows 8 fix this or is there another fix I can use?

How many CDs have you tried? I found a few older ones with copy protection couldn't be ripped on W7 but could on an old XP system. Most newer ones without protection it managed OK. Could be this or perhaps some other problem.

It has never worked on any CD new or old. I use an older computer for ripping (has windows 7, same version) but I would like to use my main cpu

While not a solution and outside the box, have you tried a third-party ripping software?

Are there differences in software installed betweent the two pc's? Might be some DigitalRightsManagement software like Protexis.

I tryed some other ripping soft ware but did not like the way they work. Guess it's a dead end

You could perhaps try swapping the CD drive from the other computer - might be that rather than software? :huh:

I have two drives in each computer. neither works on the one with the problem.
I tryed reloading windows, but that takes forever to update the service packs, etc.

Sorry for the resurrection of a dead thread....

I have this exact same problem. I also get an error C00D1197 when I start WMP (can't find file). I think what happened is I had WMP set to rip to my NAS. Then I got a new server and the network addresses all changed (from 192.168.2.x to 192.168.1.x) so now WMP can't find the folder I'd designated as a ripping destination. But now it won't let me change the destination, either.

Any ideas?

1. Close Window Media Player
2. Start > Computer
3. In the left hand pane under Libraries Right click on “Music” then click Properties.
4. Click “Include a folder…”
5. Navigate to a folder where you want to store all your music and click the “include folder” button.
6. You should now see this path in the Library locations:
7. Select the path you have just added. Click the “Set save location” button
8. Click OK.

I changed the default location for my music library to the original one. Then I was able to rip the CD.


Organize->ManageLibraries->Music

The program didnt want to rip to the Offline Files folder from the win 7 pro sync center
