I built a new computer for myself as a Christmas present 4 months back. Foolishly at the time I thought while you couldn't sell and OEM Win7 license you could transfer one across from another computer. So I transferred it from my old computer with an OEM license to my new computer and of course it didn't work.

I ended up buying Win 7 Pro Retail of a trusted seller on eBay as I couldn't find a retail outlet that still stocked it and it worked perfectly. I've gone through several updates already and never been told my copy was not genuine before. I also activated my copy of Windows.

Last night however I installed some updates. 4 were the required updates and 3 more optional updates (there were 4 available but I didn't bother to update the integrated graphics on my motherboard). This morning when I turned on my computer I was told that my Windows was not genuine.

I've scanned my computer both with AVG Free and Malwarebytes

The installed Key is NOT a retail one - it's an MAK Volume License one, which is not valid for resale. The Key has been abused, and MS have blocked it.

I would NEVER buy software in eBay - particularly Windows software - as it's known that over 50% is counterfeit.

Here's a variation on my standard spiel...

The Key in use is an MSDN Key from a not-for-resale MAK Volumme License.
Unless you are a member of the Licensed organisation, you are not entitled to use the Key – and whoever sold it to you was not entitled to do so.
You need to claim an immediate refund from the vendor - do NOT accept the offer of a new key (all they are trying to do is to get past the 45-day claims window or avoid you sending the evidence of their crimes to the authorities)

The pirates have got VERY good at this over the past few years, as the price of equipment for manufacturing the packages drops, and as factories open in less well-policed countries.

You would think if it's a MAK volume key it would say so on the license. OEM keys for example are clearly marked as such.

Ebay should help you out too, put in a claim with them.

Depending on how long it`s been :(

There is NO 'marking' of ANY Windows Key.
Caveat Emptor is the rule.
There never have been, and never will be, any sale of Windows Keys (except from MS's own servers) without also the sale of media for the software to be used on.
eBay is a different matter altogether - historically they have been somewhat less than helpful, but I gather that MS has impressed on them that that attitude is not acceptable. You may therefore get some (little?) assistance there. What has worked more often is complaining to your financing agent (Paypal/Credit Card/etc) - but make sure that you state that the reason for claim is FRAUD, rather than mis-sale, since this is a much more serious offence.

Yep, if the seller advertised a retail key and sold you a VLK, that`s absolute fraud.
