Windows Not Genuine

I'm sure there have been others with this issue and I'll continue searching but yesterday when I logged on to Win7 it said my copy was not genuine. It may be old but it's genuine and I have the key in front of me, where to add it I have no idea. I did the January updates last month and just did the February updates a few days ago. Any suggestions?

Here is the MGDA report

You can also try the Command Line to change the Product key:

  1. Click on the Start Button and type: CMD (into the 'Search programs and files' field in the Start Menu)
  2. The Start Menu will show 'CMD.exe',
  3. Right-click the CMD.exe file and select Run As Administrator.
  4. In the CMD window, type: slmgr.vbs -ipk <type your product key here>
  5. To activate windows after changing the key, type: slmgr.vbs -ato
I would open notepad or wordpad or word, and type the bold text line 4 and my product key, verify the product key is correct, then copy and paste it in the cmd window at the >
You have to right-click > paste in CMD, CRTL+V doesn't work

Bad, Bad Idea to post KEY ever.
Obscure or erase some of the key if you post something like this.

I have private messaged Brink asking him to do something in case he sees it before BrianR1 has chance to delete it!

Thank you BrianR1.
If another individual copies a posted key, in your case Windows is not active, they can activate Windows with the key, the result, if that did occur, is your key you purchased is not valid for you anymore because it is active on another computer.

Try the activation call to M$ then can help!

I deleted the snip a while back. Regardless none of this worked as there is no option to change my key or activate. I started deleting updates which showed they were from today which is impossible because I had no internet. I got to update 4338818 which when I uninstalled gave me back internet access and didn't bring up the bad activation.

I looked at KB4338818 and it's from July 2018, what the heck was it showing as being installed on 2-24-2019? I can now see the option of changing my product key and it also says 3 days until automatic activation. What would have caused this? I'm afraid to do updates now.

There is an option for you to test this!

SUGGESTION: Create a system image. This way, if things go wrong, you will be able to restore your OS back to the exact same state that it is now in a very short time. There are two imaging programs which are very popular among members here, the first is AOMEI Backupper Standard [FREE], and the second is Macrium Reflect [FREE].

I hope this helps!

My footer correct again, imagine that!

External Hard Drives are getting cheaper all the time. When I purchased my 3tb Seagate USB 3.0 Ext HDD a few years ago, it was $160. I just checked the price now, $89 free shipping.

HDD will last longer than SSD and cheaper as well.
