Windows not recognizing NVidia GeForce 8400M GT

Hey torrentg,

I followed all of your instructions for my Vaio VGN-AR630e and it didn't work. My operating system is 64bit. Is that possibly why? Do you have a workaround for me too? Thanks.

Yeah, it's there. That's what standard vga is.

Here, let me make a custom install plan for you since you're having troubles with that.

Right click on standard vga. Properties. Details tab. Change dropdown to hardware ids. Copy and paste results here. Please no screenshots for this. Thanks.

x86 I hope?

Hi!
I'm another one with this problem. No matter what I try I haven't been able to fix my GeForce 8400M GT + Windows 7. I've tried modified .inf files from several websites but I'm never sure if they're what my computer needs. I figured I'd try you and your custom .infs
Here's my info

My laptop is a Sony Vaio VGN-AR520E, btw.
I've been able to keep my computer up by using the Standard VGA thing, but I'm mainly a gamer and that obviously doesn't fly for most games :(
Anything you can do to help, I'd very much appreciate it!
Thanks and let me know if you need more info.

Did you make sure to replace the original inf?

Yep, sure did.
Did you uninstall the driver and reboot each time before trying to install a new one?

I did all of that, too.
All of the drivers + mod .inf I tried actually installed correctly, but when rebooting the parts of the screen that should be black had all sorts of graphics weirdness, like short vertical lines or dots. It did boot up though, but a few seconds after bringing up the desktop it would just go black. The power light is on but the screen is completely black. After that it would just turn off completely as if the battery had run out or something.
Of course if I uninstall the so-called appropriate driver and use the Standard VGA, things go back to normal. But it's pissing me off because I can't play anything. It's a two and a half year old computer, but come on...

iHi Christina,

I have the same graphics card as yours on Sony Vaio VGN-AR51E and it can be done. Keep on trying. It took me a while but the results are worth it. I kept on trying and then it just loaded properly, as if by accident! Try this link, if you haven't already.. http://www.sevenforums.com/graphic-cards/36593-nvidia-driver-convert-desktop-mobile-laptop.html
Make sure you have the latest DESKTOP driver from Nvidia to modify - though it sounds strange!:D

God bless

I wish I could try this, but for some stupid reason I can't even download the original driver from nvidia's website. I click search and nothing happens. Now, I've done it before and I got to the download page no problem. Why is this computer determined to drive me nuts?

I finally managed to d/l the driver from nvidia, but messing around with the .inf just isn't for me. It's too confusing when you don't know wtf you're doing. I guess I'll wait for another solution or whatever.
Thanks for giving me this link anyway!

Hi again,

Just in case you want to try my modified INF that worked for me, please find it attached.

You have already downloaded the latest desktop driver from Nvidia. It will likely be extracted in C:\Nvidia

Download my attachment and extract. Copy and paste NV_DISP.inf directly over by overwriting existing one at C:\NVIDIA\DisplayDriver\191.07\WinVista_Win7\English or wherever it is to be found.

Right click standard vga in device manager. Then click, Update driver software. Browse. Let me pick. Have disk. Browse. Now navigate to the same folder as before and double click on NV_DISP.inf. Hit ok. Reboot when done, if necessary. Enjoy your gaming!

God bless,

Ray

Windows 7 32-Bit (x86) wont detect 8400M GT

This worked for me and I hope it will work for you.

Just so you know, this worked on my:

17" SONY VAIO Laptop
Model# VGARN520E
NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GT
Running Windows 7 32-bit (x84)

*Symptom: Your system reads "Standard VGA Adapter" or something similar in the device manager. You can't figure out how to make your NVIDIA card pop up. While you've already tried to download and install the latest drivers from NVIDIA, they wouldn't install, claiming that you didn't have the right drivers for your hardware.

After hours of going through the .inf file tutorial and only coming up with garbled graphics (I must've been doing something wrong), I found a much easier and less complicated way out:

*Open a window
go to "Computer"
go to "Local Disc C:"
go to "Windows.old" (If you don't have this folder, skip to end)
go to "Windows"
go to "DRIVERS"
go to the folder that starts with "Graphics Driver (NVIDIA),..."
run the Setup in this folder
follow all prompts
restart when done
enjoy!

By doing this, you are merely installing the older driver that made your card work on your previous OS, which was most likely Vista, right?

IF YOU DON'T HAVE Windows.old-

Windows.old, as far as I know, is a folder containing a lot if not all of the older files that your previous version of Windows used to operate. The presence of this folder usually results from UPGRADING from one OS to the next, example: Vista to 7.

If you don't have this folder, you must have either deleted it, or maybe Windows 7 was the first OS installed on your computer either from factory or from it's last C drive format (wipe). This means that you have one of three options. You could:

1. Tinker around on this website and learn how to download the right update, create and/or copy over the right .inf file, and do the whole tutorial thing. (This was beyond me really. I invested the time but all I got was garbled graphics after about 15 mins every time, which means I wasn't doing something right.)

2. If your machine is old enough to install Vista, you could back up ALL of your precious files onto an external hard drive, format your C drive, install Vista, CHECK THAT VISTA IS RUNNING/DETECTING YOUR GRAPHICS CARD, then upgrade to Windows 7, and SELECT WHICHEVER OPTION "UPGRADE" OR "CUSTOM" THAT LETS YOU KEEP WINDOWS.OLD, now that you're back at Windows 7, follow the steps at the top. This is a time consuming but surefire way to do it, so long as you know how to properly format and partition your machine, and install a fresh OS.

3. Continue searching the internet for other solutions, but you may only get so far.

Personally, I like the second option the best. There's nothing like wiping your computer and starting over. I hope this helps!

Hello,

i'm having a problem with my Compaq persario CQ50-211NR laptop. I have windows 7 ultimate 32 bit and i am trying to connect to an external monitor(synaps) It wont detect the VGA ports. (basically when i go to detect the monitor, all i see is my main laptop monitor, no number 2)

the device manager says "standard VGA..." etc.
the hardware IDS says
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0845&SUBSYS_360A103C&REV_A2
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0845&SUBSYS_360A103C
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0845&CC_030000
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0845&CC_0300

See and heres another problem, the reason i am using the external monitor is because i am waiting on parts to fix my laptop, part of the LCD cracked inside and i could barely see to get my hardware IDS, right now i am using another computer. I plan on putting the driver on a USB or CD and transfer it over, any tips and advice would be amazing.

Thanks.

Hi Torrentg, you seem to have it sussed.
Just joined so i need some help.
Have just started getting problems with win 7 and Nvidia drivers for 8400M GS. It has been running for a couple of months no worries
I have installed the latest driver from Nvidia Website and tried earlier versions as well and get the same problem, that being it shuting down with either a blue , black or multi color pixcel scatter, then either rebooting or just freezing.
i have read alot of forums with same issues and now am over it.

So some insight would be nice an the best results seem to come from here :D.
I am curently having to run in safe mode as it is to unstable to run normally.
