Found that Thumbnail Preview in Windows 7 consumes almost 90 % CPU time while indexing the picture-folder. Compared with Firestone who will only take some 3 seconds to preview the whole picture folder, where the W7 viewer takes at least 21 seconds to a half a minute of more, sometimes even several minutes. The same problem occurs when you explore a large folder with thumbnail viewing on. Even then Firestone, although it can't recognize all formats, is very fast. In Task manager the only CPU swallowing process was Explorer. Normally the CPU is only 4 to 7 % busy. So more memory won't help, because the memory usage was only some 600 MB. (I've got already much more installed).

Tried Irfan view, but I don't like the small window, like windows itself with that useless large underbar with hardly any relevant information.
Faststone displays the whole screen at once.

You have to use the Irfanview thumbnails shortcut on your desktop or go to Start>All Programs> Irfanview>IrfanView - Thumbnails and then view you folders...its much faster .

Nothing specific....what ever the clients provide for Repair
What I did was buying a new main-board, almost a new PC, which solved the problem mainly.
So it has to do with capacity and speed of the processor and mem.
However it's still considerable slower inside Windows explorer, compared with for instance Firestone Viewer which shows no delay at all.
