Hi! :)

Well I have Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise installed on a Oracle Virtualbox system.
I have setup the domain and everything correctly, however, when trying to connect another virtual system / my computer It does not work, both says it is unable to resolve DNS settings. How do I fix this?

I don't know how to install the DNS

When setting up a domain controller you need to make sure that client devices point to the IP address of that domain controller for DNS services. If you properly setup the active directory and have used dcpromo.exe to promote to a domain controller then this should resolve it. You could add the DHCP role to the server and then create a scope which can hand out the relevant IP and DNS information to the client automatically. For the domain controller the DNS should settings should be point to 127.0.0.1 so that it uses itself for DNS resolutions. Equally, in DNS manager make sure you have a forwarder setup to go to a public DNS server otherwise clients will not get internet connectivity. If this is too much to configure then make sure that the secondary DNS server configured on client devices is a public DNS server (For example, 8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4 which are google's public DNS servers)

If you need more detailed steps then let me know and I'll see if I can get some screenshots to help. Please note that the earliest version of Windows Server I have worked with is 2008 so some things may be slightly different however the steps of configuration will mostly be the same.

Hope This Helps,
Josh :)

Hi Shadow JK,
Thanks for your advice,
I set up the DNS but now I have another error,
would you be able to provide a link a tutorial on the forum?

What is the error? The same as before? Is it on a client device or an error from the server?

If you post it here we can then hopefully provide the relevant resources to solve this issue :geek:

EDIT: http://www.sevenforums.com/network-sharing/300288-basic-requirements-before-posting-your-networking-thread.html. Can you please follow this tutorial for the client device that cannot connect to the domain and the windows server machine as well. More specifically, I am looking for the IPconfig part so I can see if your DNS settings are setup appropriately.

Many Thanks,
Josh

What was the FQDN (Fully Qualified Domain Name) that you setup active directory to use? For example, it should be something like companyabc.co.uk or lab.local or even contoso.internal.

The error is because it is trying to join a domain using WINS which does not have a domain architecture (.com;.co.uk;.local... etc). WINS is now legacy therefore I think the issue is with the domain that you are trying to join.

I saw in your original post that the domain you previously tried to join was server.local, is this the domain you setup?

If you can, please follow this link to check your system properties and then can you click on the Computer Name tab. Once that is done can you upload a screenshot here so I can see what domain you have setup and then we can troubleshoot from there.

Lastly, if you can follow my previous post and show us the IPconfig output that would be greatly appreciated :)

My apologies for any confusion, I am just trying to identify what the possible cause may be,

Josh
