Windows Update 0x80070057 error - is there a soultion?

Hi Folks,

Tried umpteen things in the last 24hrs to resolve a problem I'm experiencing with Windows Update - so I'm hoping that the good folks at SevenForums might be able to help....

I have managed to manually install the .NET Framework 4.6.1 (via this link to KB 3102438: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=49981).

I have run the Windows Update Troubleshooter several times (link: http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9830262) and I always get the same error - see image below.

I have also run the System Update Readiness Tool (KB947821) from here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=20858 several times and also the EasyFix 50205.msi

When I run Windows Update - all I get is the following (and after an hour of "no progress", I give up).

I ran a full AV scan yesterday after updating the definitions files (Kaspersky Total Security 16.0.0.614e) and a Malwarebytes scan - again after updating - both found no threat.

I have also run sfc (System File Checker) three times from an elevated command prompt (after re-boot each time) and have no reported "integrity violations".

Getting short of things to try.

Machine details:
CPU: Core 2 Duo T5800 2GHz with 4GB RAM.
HDD: WD Black 750GB with 222GB free
Windows OS: Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium SP1.

Any help gratefully accepted - thanks in anticipation.

BTW, I DO NOT want any update to do with Windows 10 carp
(e.g. KB2952664 / KB2990214 / KB3022345 / KB3035503 / KB3035583 / KB3123862)

Hi,
Have you hidden the updates you posted ?
If so unhide them
Windows will search for updates doing so might help a little
If you've hidden any Important updates like kb3112343 windows might throw a fit

Use winkey+R
Type in the Run box,
eventvwr
Windows logs on the left column and expanded them and right click and click on clear on the 4 entries below,
Applications
Security
Setup
System
Exit and restart the machine again

Download the newest update client if you haven't already

I'm following your suggestions on answers.microsoft.com. Just posted on there under 10 mins ago (thread: Windows Update stuck at 0% and not downloading - Microsoft Community).

I believe that I have updated to the newest Update Client KB 3138612 (and also .NET Framework 4.6.1)

Not sure about KB 3112343 as when I click on 'View Update History' it only gives me the two updates that I installed this morning (KB 3135988 and KB 3135983). Apart from going through Windows Update, is there any way to check that KB 3112343 is installed??

I installed .NET Framework 4.6.1 from the link that you provided on the microsoft site - but it isn't showing up in the installed updates - is there any other way I can check that this has actually been installed?

Hi Roy,

Thanks. Went to Language & Region settings and '.' (dot) was already there as the decimal symbol, so I over-wrote it with a different character and then pit it back to '.' (dot).

Looked for the registry setting in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\System but couldn't find the subfolder 'System' in that location - only 'System Certificates' (??)

Appreciate your reply however and will now restart my PC to see if this has made any difference.

Net shows up in programs and features/ uninstall a program.

When was your last successful update installed ?

Yes, .NET 4.6.1 appears in 'Programs & Features'.

Below is the updates that I've managed to install manually today. Will have a go at KB3126587 again unless Windows Update automatically downloads it later today.

Date is in UK format: dd/mm/yy

I'll just answer a couple of questions then you can let the members who are helping you know the results.

To check for an installed update - Open an Elevated Command Prompt

In the window that opens type powershell then press Enter. Wait for the PS promt to appear.

Type: get-hotfix -id KB3112343

Press Enter then wait for the results. An error message in red text means that the update was not found. If installed it should display this:

It should indeed show up in installed updates. There are a few ways to check if it's installed but the easiest way is to download this small portable program that runs without installation:

View attachment netver.zip​

Extract the executable to your desktop and run it. Copy the results to your clipboard and paste them here for other members to advise.

The problem is sorted and Windows Update is now running properly.

.Net Framework 4.6.1 is installed (shows up in CP > Progs & features)
