Windows Update could not search for new updates, error 80080005

Hello,

I've been trying for hours to fix a problem with the Windows Update on my laptop. I run Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 x64.

Lately, I noticed that the automatic update is always installing the same 4 updates and this has been going for 2 months. So I tried to search for the solution on the Internet. I've been doing Windows Fix it, and some other stuff that I can find online but none worked. I did clean boot and disabling the Anti Virus (Kaspersky), it didn't solve the problem. I have also tried restoring the system back to the last time the update was working normally. Still, every time I click check for update, it always produce the red sign with the message:
Windows could not search for new updates
Error found: Code 80080005

Could anybody please help me solve this problem? I am concerned about the security of my computer now.
I have attached the Windows Update log files in case it is required.

Pleasefollow the WindowsUpdate Posting Instructions and post the requested data

If the file is too large (8MBcompressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file isbelow the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (theforum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

Thanks for replying. I've just finally got time to do the posting instructions.

The System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) installation was successful. However when I try to do the sfc /scannow I got the message Windows Resource Protection Could Not Start the Repair Service. As instructed, I try to start the Windows Modules Installer service, but it refuses to start and shows the error message:
Error 126: The specified module could not be found.
What should I do next??

One of the main registry hives appears to be unreadable, for whatever reason.
I suspect that your best option is going to be a repair install, unless you have a System Restore point that extends back before the problem appeared.

What happens if you attempt a System Restore? (how far back is the oldest available restore point?)?

Currently the oldest system restore point is yesterday (Nov 15), which is weird, because I tried restoring the system a week ago and there were restore points available until August. I wonder where they go...

Anyway, I used the System Restore to the point when the updates were still working (i.e. beginning of Sept, the last time it installed updates other than the 4 same ones I mentioned before), but it didn't solve the problem. So, I undid the restore.

Then, does that mean there's no choice other than repair install? Could you tell me how to do this? Thanks.

OK then I'll do it tomorrow. Btw, will it erase my files (my music, photos, documents, etc.) and installations? Do I need to back up?

And, I don't think I have the installation CD, will downloading the ISO file from the thread do it for me?

Hi, sorry I still haven't got time to do the repair install since I need to use a program everyday for now. I will be needing it until the middle of December, so I think I will do it at that time.

I have this question I've been wondering for a while. Should I go all the way to format my laptop and reinstall it again so that my laptop will be "fresh" again? Afterall, I will need to backup my files.

No problems about waiting - I have quite enough to keep me busy in the meantime!

A repair install usually takes around 1-3 hours - but can take longer - and then comes the laborious task of reinstalling updates.

As far as Update installation is concerned my normal method seems to work well...

1) Install all 'Security Update for Windows 7' - reboot and run a new Check for Updates
2) Install all 'Update for Windows 7', and any new/failed ones from step 1 - reboot and run a new Check for Updates
3) Install IE8 updates if offered, and any new/failed ones from steps 1/2 - reboot and run a new Check for Updates
4) Install IE9/10/11 as offered ensuring that you fully update each installed version before upgrading to the next offered one rebooting after each batch, installing any new/failed ones from steps 1/2/3 - reboot and run a new Check for Updates
5) Install .NET updates - first install all v3.5 updates, since these are part of Windows. Then install .NET 4.x and update it, and any new/failed ones from steps 1-4 - reboot and run a new Check for Updates rinse and repeat
6) Install any other remaining Important updates
7) install any of the optional updates you want.
