I am writing this windows safe mode.

Cannot get computer to boot in reg mode. Sat for 40 minutes, with message "please wait while windows configures"

Am running windows 7, 64 bit home, Dell Inspiron 570

It started yesterday when it downloaded updates for Windows. After the restart, the computer screen looked strange and could not open any programs. Went to "start" and re-booted, same thing happened again. I again went to start, this time it came up with 2 errors. (wish I had wrote them down) but said something about windows cannot find such and such. (sorry) Anyway, clicked on the "X" and windows came up again, but nothing would open. Had to hard boot as the start button would not even work.
Rebooted into safe mode and have tried to return to a previous restore point. Seems I don't have any. So can't do that.
I did go go to the recent installed windows updates and deleted them. But will not let me change the settings as in: Don't install updates automatically. I don't know if it is trying to install those over and over again.

I tried to get it to come up again with the errors, but no such luck, it just sits with the blue welcome screen, then the "please wait"

I am at a loss as to what to do next. :(

I have my operating system disk and my recovery disk.

Thanks,
Jennifer

You may try one thing, if you can remind on which date that update took place.

Click on the start button > Control Panel > Programs and Features. .
In the resulting window, look at the left side pane, click on "view installed updates"

In the resulting window, search for the update's date, under "Microsoft Windows"
When got it, Select it, right click on it, and uninstall.

Remember that all updates cannot be uninstalled.

When uninstalled, restart your computer.

Let us know the result.

One of the first things I did after getting into safe mode, was to uninstall the 3 updates for yesterday, which is when it started.

So far, still cannot get into windows normally. Can in safe mode.

Can you tell us the source / event source of that error code?

I guess I'm not sure what you are asking.

I went into F12 and it asked me if I wanted to run a diagnostic check, I figured why not. So I hit yes. And that is the error that came up. I counted the beeps twice and am sure there where 8 of them. That was about 1 hour ago.

An error code alone is not any meaningful information. The same code may generate from various event source.

Depending on source, it might me McAfee related problem, and it may be Windows update related problem. So, that one is needed.

Thank you for your help, the only thing that I am sure about is what caused the crash. It was trying to restart after downloading 3 windows updates.

Nothing I have tried so far has worked. When doing some research, I found things that would cause this such as a video card? Is this possible?

I also tried to run on my "repair windows 7 disk" that did nothing. Said it was loading files, and then back to black screen. Waited for 30 minutes and then normal windows came up with the following

Location is not available.
c\windows\sstem 32\config\sstem pofile\desktop refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on a harddrive on this computer, or on a network. Check to make sure the disk is properly inserted or that you are connected to the internet or your network and then try again.

If it still cannot be located, the information might have been moved to a different location. (hit okay)

When I try to click on any program.... I get the error: Fail to connect.

The server process cold not be started because the configured identity is incorrect. Check the user name and password.

I can see the recycle bin, time and date. All black screen. I can see the start button and will only let me shutdown. If I try to hit any other button on my desktop, I get this:

Error: 26EE0668-A00A-4407-9371-BEB064C98683 \0\ 05D7B0F4 2121 4EFF BF6BED3F69B894D9

I loaded my repair disk that I made when I got the computer and get this error: 0x4001100200001012

I am running AVG Full as my virus program. I have no log in or password.

What you quoted above is over my head. Sorry.:(

Do you have another machine available to you? if so I would use that.

F12 on a dell will give you the boot menu, one option is the dell diagnostics. Error code 0142 on a Dell is a failing hard drive. At this point back up whatever you can and use dell's website to see if your PC is still under warranty. You can also call and use your express service code (all numbers so it can be used via touch tone phone) to see if you are under warranty. If you are not under warranty I would suggest a couple things. Either bring it to a repair shop where they can clone your system to a new drive and repair or do the procedure yourself. I do at least 4 of these a week and they range from difficult to VERY easy. Depending on how bad the drive is you can actually repair windows 7, just make sure you use the correct disk, ie. you have win7 pro sp1, make sure the disk is the same. Windows 7 can only be repaired if you can boot to it (they call it an upgrade for some reason). After cloning I would suggest a check disk (chdsk /r) be run to ensure consistency on the new drive, then perform a repair.

Xp was the best for repair, to bad they dropped that...

Did a clean install....everything is running fine. Took me a day to get everything back up and running. But saved all my stuff, so was not that hard to do. I did forget to backup my bookmarks, but that was not a big deal after everything else.

Feels like a brand new machine! ;) Thank you for all the help,:)
