Windows update drivers or 'official'?

Hello

I've been doing installations of Windows for a while now. But, now that I saw one tutorial here, do I have to install device drivers prior to Windows updates? I ask because I have an old motherboard and there's no support for Windows 7, but I've always installed them in Compatibility mode and after WU.
The network driver installs itself, it's like Windows does it. And I then install the one found on the mobo's website, so it's like I overwrite the one provided by Windows [update] (which I think has a later date). Am I doing wrong?

Asrock 775i65G R2.0

So, should I install these drivers and the run Windows update?

Thanks

Hi,
As long as you have internet connection it really doesn't matter otherwise it would be the one driver you'd need to manually install :)

One more thing,
**FSB1066-CPU is supported by overclocking only when you adopt an external VGA card and DDR400 CL2.5 memory modules.
I have the Core 2 quad Q6600 and a ATI Radeon HD 4650 and DDR400 CL3 ram (but this is not the issue)

Turns out I can't do a clean installation using the video card: after first restart of Windows installation, BSOD happens. According to Windows, reason being atikmdag.sys. Therefore it's not possible to finish. So, what I do is install Windows without the video card and without the CPU; I can't leave the CPU there 'cause it needs the card as stated in the quote.

When the desktop is ready, after finishing the installation of Windows, I shutdown and replace the CPU and plug the card, having disabled the on-board graphics and the processor in Device manager. Not to mention that, when Windows recognizes the card, it installs some drivers for AGP and other stuff. But, also, a driver for the Radeon that, if I restart as required, results in a BSOD. I have to disable display adapters in Device manager and then install the driver for the card.

Is ok to do that at that point or at all? Is there a safer way or process I should follow?

Hiyya mate can you please clarify what RAM you have do you mean DDR4 or DDR 400?? either way the processor is a tad out of it's place as those Q cores usually ran with DDR2 RAM unless I am terribly mistaken.

Just how old is this machine anyway??

Could you please follow this
Now before we can help we do need to know what is in your machine so please do this System Info - See Your System Specs
or either enter the specs of your system in your forum profile the specs will appear when we click on that little box bottom left of the post screen it is for me the preferable option as it is easy. As you may appreciate it is very hard when you don’t know what one is working with for example a diesel or petrol engine. Please include what antivirus program you are using.

If you are getting BSOD's then if you can please follow these

This is actually a very clever solution (una solucion muy inteligente) to the problem you are facing. As ThrashZone stated above, you can install the drivers either before or after installing Windows. Since you can't install them before, if you can get Windows installed successfully, you can then install the drivers. You have found a way to get Windows installed successfully in spite of this problem, so I give you an A+ on your solution.

Sometimes the easiest way to install Windows on a computer is to simply copy the install from another computer. However, if you do it that way, you will then need to install most, if not all, of your drivers, in order for things to work correctly. I have done this successfully on several occasions. This is similar to what you have done here. The only concern I haven't mentioned with this approach is that you will have the same Windows license on both computers. The two computers will each need to have its own valid Windows license, so that issue will need to be addressed.

About the BSOD, I already made a post there (unsolved ), and here it's more about learning about these hardware changes, compatibility and installation of drivers.

OK mate now from what you have posted I can see a few things that are a little odd to me for starters you are trying to run Ultimate on 2GB RAM and an old form of RAM at that you should really have a minimum of 4GB RAM to run that version of Windows and I am still confused as to why the CPU is inserted onto an old board.
Now I don't want to sound bumptious but the machine does seem to e made up of some pretty odd components.

Now I am not sure why you cannot post the BSOD dumps it would make advising you on what to do.

My computer works perfectly with those components. I just can't overload the RAM by using a lot of things and stuff, but for basic tasks it works just alright.
I'm not sure you need 4 GB of RAM to be able to run Ultimate, can you confirm that? There were computers in the market with such RAM with stock Windows 8. I think it has to do with the type of RAM as well.
And this CPU is supported by my motherboard, it's in the specifications.

Hi,
4gb's of ram is a good minimum for running 64 bit it really doesn't matter which version of windows

Sort of interesting error without the amd gpu sort of states your over clocking the cpu if so restore to default bios settings.

As Thrash Zone and I have both said mate 4GB required for the Ultimate and personally I would have to have that amount 64bit or 32bit on any version.

Now the other thing is you are using quite an old board and therefore an old version of RAM and if it is DDR1 then I don't think you are going to get the performance I am assuming you are after.

As long as 2GB is fine for the OP, then so be it. Unless the OP feels like the performance is not enough for his daily tasks, then it's time to upgrade.

This is the first time I have seen a Core 2 Quad paired with DDR400, it's actually a bit complicated to me rather than just buying a G33/G31 Motherboard and 4GB DDR2 ram, Q6600 works well with it.

Yes, I can say it's fine. I don't use a lot of things, or programs that require that much RAM. Though there are some little things that these 2 GB fall short at, but I believe that even with those same two, the detail that could change that is the CL (which I don't know what is), that, as I said before, is 3 and should be 2.5 -If someone knows about this, please...

Can you, RoasterMen , tell me some about the Core 2 Quad being paired with the DDR400?

This thread turned into a hardware discussion X'D

Hi,
Hardware needs drivers :)
Man, I know but we started talking about hardware as such, and how components interact, not how drivers affect this interaction. Not saying that we should stay in topic, but yeah...

Ok mate well unfortunately that motherboard only supports 2GB RAM so it is pointless trying to add say 2x2GB sticks. ASRock > 775i65G R2.0

Now I see that does do overclocking unless I am reading it wrong and for what it is worth I think you are better off getting a replacement board that can take more RAM. The core you have will fit quite a few anyway but having said that you have to take a chance on buying a used board and getting Microsoft to agree to let you use that OS key on the new board. If you explain to them the old board has died then they are usually quite good at letting you re-use that key you have for th e board you have now.

Myself have a tester machine with a Q9650 processor and it is flyer but there again the machine does have DDR2 RAM in it and an SSD etc etc
