Hi I was wondering if anyone knows how to fix this windows update problem. The pop up message said it was an error code of 80070490, but when I cancel that the main windows update window says Error code 490.

You have a number of problems in the registry - as far as I can see at present, there are no file problems.

Please copy the file C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS (no file extension) to your desktop, and then compress it.
Then upload the compressed file to your favoured fileshare site (SkyDrive or Dropbox would be fine) and post a link.

Either myself or Tom982 will then pick it up, and see what we can do with it.

Hello ericwoo and welcome to the forums

Thanks for the logs.

Before we continue, I would like you to backup your registry:

Backup the Registry | niemiro's Website

Open your start menu, and in the search box type regedit, when the results load, right click on regedit and select Run as administrator. From regedit, I would like you to navigate to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing

Right click on the Component Based Servicing key and select Permissions. Click Advanced, then select the Owner tab. On this list, click on your username (e.g. Mine is displayed as Tom (Tom-PC\Tom)) to select it, tick the box labelled Replace owner on subcontainers and objects then click Apply then OK.

Now, in this first permissions window, you should see a few entries in the Group or user names: box. Click on Administrators once to select it, then check that the Full Control (Allow) box is ticked, if it isn't then tick it. Then repeat this check for TrustedInstaller. Then click OK, and close regedit.

Download the attached file, ericwoo.reg and save it to your Desktop. Double-click on the file to run it. You will be asked to confirm whether you wish to merge this file to the registry, click Yes. Then reboot, run the SURT, and upload the CheckSUR.persist.log please!

Tom

Hi Eric,

Just to confirm, did you run regedit as an administrator? If not, can you read through the instructions again please. If you did, continue with the instructions anyway :)

I tried it again and ensured to run as admin, but it is still doing this. I realized that the Permissions tab says only the name "TrustedInstaller" has it's permission set at Full Control.

The other Names' permissions are set to Read which are: SYSTEM, Administrators (Eric-PC\Administrators), Users (Eric-PC\Users).

Should I just change Users (Eric-PC\Users) to Full Control?

So I just disregarded this message and continued with the rest of the instructions. I clicked on the ericwoo.reg file and a message popped up saying:

Cannot import C:\Users\Eric\Desktop\ericwoo.reg: The specified file is not a registry script. You can only import binary registry files from within the registry editor.

It's Tom's thread now :)
Do you have UAC enabled (the default), or disabled? - it needs to be enabled for everything to work as expected.

Sorry for the delay! I thought that I had posted this but it was sat in a tab in the background waiting for me to post.

Change Administrators (Eric-PC\Administrators) to Full Control please. Then download and run the attached fix, ericwoo.reg, delete the one you have already downloaded as I have updated it.

When you have merged that file, do the same with ericwoov2.reg

So I just disregarded this message and continued with the rest of the instructions. I clicked on the ericwoo.reg file and a message popped up saying:

Cannot import C:\Users\Eric\Desktop\ericwoo.reg: The specified file is not a registry script. You can only import binary registry files from within the registry editor.

Thanks, I have seen the error in my script. I thought regedit parsed the file linearly but now it looks like it doesn't.

I'd been in the pub - and needed time to sober up.

Haha, no worries. I'm just glad I don't have to play with the registry hive!

Hi Eric,

I have realised the error in my ways. regedit only likes ANSI encoded registry scripts and will return that error when submitting a unicode script, which I did in ericwoo.reg, but not in ericwoov2.reg. The problem here is that I have to use unicode as some of the characters are unicode characters:

Code:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\PackageDetect\Microsoft-Windows-InternetExplorer-Optional-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~0.0.0.0]
"Microsoft-Windows-InternetExplorer-Optional-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~en-US~8.0.7600.163[COLOR=Red][B]Â[/B][/COLOR]¸5"=-

This will take a little more work to fix so I will have a think and get back to you tomorrow - it's just gone past 4am here and I've got to be in a lecture at 9!

Tom

Okay, I just converted that file to ANSI and it worked. Is that okay?

Now I have to run through the rest of your steps and get back to you . Thanks for all your help so far.

Unfortunately - no.
You may have removed an entry, but it will not be the entry that actually needed to be removed.
Please run the following command and post the output -

Code:
REG QUERY "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\PackageDetect\Microsoft-Windows-InternetExplorer-Optional-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~0.0.0.0" /S

.

Here are some instructions to make life easier :)
1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response. (in a Code Box please)
