Hi Eric,

That looks much better! One last step now:

Command Prompt

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    regedit /e
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\tom982.reg "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing"

  4. This will create a text file called tom982.reg in the root folder of your main drive (e.g. C:\tom982.txt). Please attach this to your next post.

Hi Eric,

Thanks for the export. Unfortunately, this is going to be a bit more than one last step! The corruption shown in your CheckSUR log should be the same as that in the registry export, but there is no corruption in your export so we'll have to hunt a little more:

Command Prompt

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg

  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    REG LOAD HKLM\COMPONENTS %SYSTEMROOT%\system32\config\components

  4. This will create a text file called tom982.txt in the root folder of your main drive (e.g. C:\tom982.txt). Please copy and paste the contents of this into your next post.

Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.

  • Click the Look button to start the scan.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

Tom, that's okay. I really appreciate your help and it's good to sort of learn what's going on.

Hi Eric,

This is so odd, I've never seen anything like it before.

Can you zip up and post your CBS folder please? Hopefully it will give us a little more information on this one:

Hi Eric,

Your CBS log is showing the same problem with these files:

Code:

Let's have one last search for this, I'm hoping that the lack of results last time were because it didn't like the funny unicode characters.

System Look

Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.

  • Click the Look button to start the scan.

Tom - isn't that reference in CBS to the registry entry in the COMPONENTS hive?

are the two places where the string Microsoft-Windows-IE-Troubleshooters-Package appear in the COMPONENTS hive?
(the p!CBS_.... value)

(Note - that's an SP1 clean install updated. - similar results should appear for RTM?)

So is there any hope for me? Do I have a virus that is preventing the fix?

One of the reasons I ask is last week my computer spammed a bunch of people on my yahoo email account.

Hi Eric,

Sorry for the delay. I thought I had replied to this.

I've checked everywhere I can think of and still can't find where this error is being generated from. None of my searches have come back with anything out of the ordinary so I'm really starting to run short of ideas. Unless Noel has anything further to add then I'm afraid the only way forward is to do a repair install:

Thanks guys I appreciate your help. I will just do a repair install as you suggest, but I am stuck on step 3:

It says:
3. Do either step 4, 5, or 6 below depending if your retail Windows 7 installation ISO/DVD/USB has SP1 or not, and if your currently installed Windows 7 has SP1 installed or not.

How do I figure out which step is needed?

Also, I never recieved any installation software with my computer. It just told me to create a recovery disc. But it sounds like they provide the files to download, correct?

Always best to do the repair with the latest SP level - so either 4 or 5.
Yep - Win7 is the only OS for which this is true (luckily)!

If you're having problems working out which edition and bitness of Windows you have, use Belarc Advisor www.belarc.com to detail the software installed (and a lot more!)
