windows update error code 80070002

I have been getting the windows update error code 80070002 for a while now.

I ran SURT and did not get any errors.
When running sfc / scannow I get the error "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation." after a few seconds.

I'm not positive but I think there is some corruption in my HKLM\COMPONENTS

I have run Chkdsk /r /f and did not get any bad sectors

I should warn you that my track record n fixing this type of error is not good (yet!) - mostly because its rare.
Having said that, it does look like there is corruption in your registry.

I need to have a look at your COMPONENTS registry hive

Please copy the C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS file (no extension) to your desktop and then compress it - upload the compressed file to your favoured fileshare site (preferably Dropbox or OneDrive) and post a link.

If we can't fix the problem I might just upgrade the OS HDD to a SSD next week and do a clean install.

Bad news, I'm afraid - the registry hive is missing a large chunk of data, and there's no way to fix it manually.
You're going to have to try a repair install and hope that works - otherwise, it's time for a clean install.

That is what I was afraid of.

I tried to do a repair install and got "Setup can't continue. Restart the computer and restart Setup. When prompted, try getting the latest updates."
