Hi,
I have an issue with windows update and from what I can tell the problems seem to be related to the windows update components on my lap top. At the moment I cannot install any windows updates. I tried numerous things to get the updates working but I do not think the updates themselves are the issue.
I ran the Troubleshooting utility from the Control Panel and get the following message.
"Repair Windows Update component" (saying not fixed).
I also ran Fix it and got more or less the same error message as above.
I am running Windows 7 home edition, the 64 bit version.

I did try that tool several times and gave it another go just now. It installs the hotfix but I still have the same issues when I try to install through windows update.

I get the error Code 80070426.

I have also tried to download the updates straight from the microsoft web site but they do not install either.

Are you trying to install all updates at once?

Try 2 or 3 at a time.

Btw, whats the date of installation of your OS?

Let us know.

I have tried one at a time, two at a time, three at a time etc. I try different ones first etc. Not sure what you mean by OS date. Where will I find it. I have had the lap top for 10 months and updates have worked fine until recently.

Tried everything from that link. Still not working. Could it be something to do with the registry. This is getting quite annoying.

These updates will just not install.

The 80070426 error is 'Service not started' - the question is which service??
Please open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands.

NET START BITS
NET START WUAUSERV
NET START SPPSVC
NET START SPPUINOTIFY

copy and paste the results into your reply.

Here are some instructions to make life easier :)
1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the CP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Windows, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

It means that it's not these services which are the problem :)

There are a large number of services which should either be running all the time, or run on demand - and I seem to have missed the one that's not properly starting in your case.

let's try a few more of the 'usual suspects'

NET START CRYPTSVC
NET START TRUSTEDINSTALLER

Now that's one I didn't expect - the CRYPTSVC has been removed!
You should also be seeing non-genuine flags all over the place, but you haven't mentioned that?

Please post an MGADiag report.

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool
(download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
- **in your own thread**, please
Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

Hi Noel,

Thanks for all this. I am just at work now so will do this when I get home tonight. Just a couple of things-

-I am not sure what you mean by non-genuine flags. I did not see any messages like this.

-When you said post the results in “your own thread” do just mean a new post in this thread

-Finally. Is this a major problem I have or just a matter of finding out where the issue is. It’s all rather new for me.

Once again thanks for your help.

Jason

We've already found out the essential problem - BUT if you're not seeing messages saying that Windows isn't genuine, then there are certainly other problems, as removing the CRYPTSVC should result in an immediate non-genuine notification.

There's no point in just fixing the cryptsvc problem if there's a lot more to do also.

I hope this is what you are after.

I have a sticker on the back of the lap top but there are several numbers other than the product key. Can you give me a clue which one it is?

Windows 7 (64 Bit)
That's fine - I am very surprised that it's not showing as non-genuine, but the errors showing are what would be expected from simply having the Cryptsvc removed.

To fix this,
Download the following file - 'good cryptsvc key.zip' (it's on my SkyDrive at https://skydrive.live.com/#cid=936736BB8FCEB92F&id=936736BB8FCEB92F%21485 ) and save it to your desktop.

Right-click on the file, and select Extract - extract it to the desktop and open the resulting folder.

In the folder, right-click on the 'good cryptsvc key.reg' file and select Merge - accept the prompt and warning, and you should get a success message.

reboot and run another MGADiag report.
