Well its mostly good news. 7 of the updates did install. But there are two that still do not but I get a different error message.
It says 80070490 for both of them.
When I have looked up the error it said the CBS Manifest file is corrupt. I tried running the system readiness tool as recommended but still the last two updates do not install.

Try running SFC


SFC -System File Checker - Instructions
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.
At the Command prompt, type
SFC /SCANNOW
and hit the Enter key

Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.
Post an MGADiag report with details of any error messages encountered.

Copy the CBS.log file to your desktop, then compress it, and attach it to your reply.

There are a large number of files and patches in a 'pending' state - but the control file for them is missing, so they are sat in limbo.
Many of these files appear to relate to .NET

My suspicions are deepening that you've been using some kind of system optimisation tool - and it's got the system into a fairly unstable state.

Is System Restore working? Try restoring back to the first Restore point created this month, if you can (it will need to be before the 14thAug) and see if that helps.

hmmm.

I can't go back that far on the system restore. It only goes back 4 days or so. The laptop came with windows built in. But is there a way I can get windows reinstalled? (worst comes to worst).

OK - let's start with this, then...
Open an Elevated Command Prompt window, and run teh following commands

net stop wuauserv
net stop CryptSvc
ren %windir%\system32\catroot2 catroot2.old
ren %windir%\SoftwareDistribution sold.old
net start CryptSvc
net start wuauserv

WAIT 10 minutes (this gives the system time to rebuild any files)
Reboot
Now try Windows Update to see if the issue has been resolved.

Sadly it did not work. Same errors.

Something must have happened with that command as it cleared out the update history in the windows update panel. So updates were downloaded but did not install.

NO, the history is only that - a log file.
If you look in the Installed Updates listing, the updates will still be present. (you can check the list against a Belarc report if you like)


Run Microsoft Fix It Tool 50202 to reset Windows Update components:

3. Locate the downloaded file and double click it to run the tool.

Same old story unfortunately.
I ran the fix it program. It applied some fix or something and asked me to restart, which I did. I re-ran the check for updates. They down loaded but failed again when they tried to install. Same error message.

My knowledge of Windows Updates is limited - but it looks to me as if there are 5 updates waiting for installation, although that's better than it was at first with 10 :)

According to You receive a "0x80070490" error code when you use Windows Update or Microsoft Update Web sites to install updates your next option is a repair install, which seems rather heavy-handed to me!

Since your system is still pre-SP1, you may find that (if it installs at all!) installing Service Pack one will also fix the updates problem.
You'd need to download the offline installer for your x64 installation - from Download: Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (KB976932) - Microsoft Download Center - Download Details (you'll need the 903MB one, second from bottom of the list!)

If it doesn't install, then you'll probably need to do the repair install. :(

I just wanted to say a big thank you for your help. I took it into a repair shop and they were able to get it fixed very quickly. They did something to the registry and downloaded the updates directly from the MS web site. So it's all good now. Once again thanks for everything. I learnt a lot as well!

I was getting a error on Windows 7 update and this is how I fixed it.

Step 1 Click on the Windows Button on the Taskbar and in the search window type in services.msc, press enter on the keyboard.
Step 2 Scroll down to Windows Update STOP the Service
Step 3 Open the Windows Explorer and goto C:\Windows and look for a folder called "SoftwareDistribution"
Step 4 Right Click on "SoftwareDistribution" and rename folder to "_SoftwareDistribution"
Step 5 Once the folder is renamed go back and Start Windows Update Service that you stop in Step 1.
Step 6 Now run the Windows Update program that is local in your Start Menu

I hope this fixed your problem with Windows Update.
