Windows update service won't stay disabled

I've turned off windows updates (don't download and don't install), and stopped and disabled the service, but it keeps installing some updates. When I look at windows services later, instead of the "Disabled" I set it to, it says "Automatic (delayed start)". How can I disable it for sure?

Why do you want to disable Windows Updates?.

Disabling the Windows Update service will disable more than just automatic update. This would disable all types of Windows update, even when initiated manually. You really shouldn't be doing this.

Thanks guys. I only turned the service off because it was installing updates in spite of turning off all windows updates in the settings.

I read that virus protection and other programs can force updates despite my settings. I guess I'll try turning off my Symantec virus protection for a little while to check if that's what's causing it.

Why do you want to disable Windows Updates?.

After recent updates, I couldn't get printer (epson nx420) wifi access to work. So I uninstalled/reinstalled or system restore, and it works until the next update.

I personally manually check for Windows updates which includes Microsoft Security Essentials updates about 3 times a day. 99% of the time all I get is Microsoft Security Essentials updates.

There are some services that Windows will launch regardless of what a user does. I think WU might be one of those core services that will be corrected by the OS.

I also have WU set to notify only and have never had any updates installed until I launch WU and hit the install button. There are many applications that update themselves and you might think it's part of WU - it's not... it's a stub program specific to that application that checks for updates specific to that application only.

No application can force a WU, as far I as I know.

Turning off your AV application isn't a great idea. I strongly suggest that you turn it back on.

I'm going out on a limb here and will restate the issue as

The WiFi access to my Epson NX420 printer does not work after an update.
I've reinstalled the printer and Wifi works until the next update (it's not certain which update is causing this)

If the above describes why you tried to disable WU then SF members can try to help you resolve that.

I use the same setting. This way any updates that I have heard are problematic can be hidden and not installed. In the same vain I try not to install new updates immediately upon release, but rather wait a few days at least to see if anyone is experiencing problems with them
