Solved Windows Update situation re: Net Framework

I have a situation with a recent Windows Update -

Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Client Profile for Windows 7 x64-based Systems (KB982670)
Installation date: ?10/?28/?2010 10:41 AM
Installation status: Failed
Error details: Code 643
Update type: Recommended
The Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Client Profile provides a subset of features from the .NET Framework 4. The Client Profile is designed to run client applications and to enable the fastest possible deployment for Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) and Windows Forms technology.

When trying to see what code 643 is, it shows info on Windows Installer.
I was not in safe mode and since I'm a home user.

A moderator at another forum suggested I download the dotnetfx_cleanup_tool and run; reboot ; then install the dotNetFx40_Full_x86_x64.exe. I have done all 3 of these suggestions and cannot get the .NET Framework 4 to install. I never could get answers to my questions, so am here to try to find out what damage has been done, if any and if there is something I need to fix all this. He did ask me in the end why did I want .NET Framework 4 which I thought unusual -- that should have been mentioned in the beginning of our going in circles.

Anyhway, I did go to CONTROL PANEL, PROGRAM FEATURES and found that I have .NET Framework 3.5.1. There is a blue box to the left which indicates only part of the feature is turned on. When I click on the + symbol, two more items show up that do not have checkmarks in them. They are: Windows Communication Foundation HTTP Activation and Windows Communication Founcation Non-HTTP Activation. Should either of these have a checkmark in them?

If I do not need the newest version, I cease and desist on trying to get it. My concern is now since running the cleanup utility, what has that done to my pc, if anything, and might I have problems in the future?

Should a system restore be considered to go back to before I ran the utility?

I would appreciate any help on this, please.

If you can find a restore point before the update that still works that is a very simple but effective remedy.

Do you know how to use the system restore? If not I will find the tutorial to guide you through.

Hopefully that will get you back to original condition. Then if you wish to do the .net4 install we can find one of the experts on that to help.

Unfortunately this is only one solution ,there is no another one if this method fail

It's normal.There are defaults settings.

I can't promise any advice help to solve problem or get answer but try below:
1.make sure you don't have any hexadecimal folder on any partition.hexadecimal folder=folder which name contains hexadecimal digits.Such kind of folders are only directly on partition not in any subfolder.If you have such kind of folder then you have to remove them
2.Uninstall all 3p security software
3.Run cmd.exe with elevated previlliges (right click on cmd.exe and choose "run as admin") and type

sfc /scannow

4.Run readiness Tool Description of the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista, for Windows Server 2008, for Windows 7, and for Windows Server 2008 R2,this will create CheckSur.log file in C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder.In the same folder you will find also CBS.log - pack both files and attache to post.

Should a system restore be considered to go back to before I ran the utility?

You may use it only if you have check point where everything was OK.

I met with a friend this p.m. who is a computer techie by trade. He got me straightened out so this thread may be considered closed. The system restore was a big help towards fixing this situation. I found that .Net Framework is something I really don't need as long as I don't have a program that requires it -- which I don't.
