Windows vs. Chrome OS, so it begins, or at least it’s about to. At the end of the past week, Google started sending out invitations to a Chrome team event on December 7th, 2010, in San Francisco.

The promise from the Mountain View-based search giant is that some exciting news about Chrome will be made public. No other details were offered, but the general consensus among various third-party sources seems to be that the event is related to Chrome OS.

Google’s open source Linux-based operating system has been cooking for some time now, and the company now seems closer than ever to place a foothold in Windows territory.

Speculation indicates that Google might ready a Beta preview of Chrome OS which would ship on a netbook offered to developers.

However, this is not the actual general availability deadline of Chrome OS, which was postponed to 2011, with Google refusing to detail the reasons of the delay. Chrome OS was initially planned for availability by the end of 2010.

Not really. As it is basically a Netbook OS, all it really has to be able to do is be able to create simple Office Documents, browse the web and play music and videos. Hardly a Windows competitor. The entire "target audience" is completely different for one thing.

Wich linux distro' has such features like Chrome OS? (sandboxing, verified boot, and so on...)

Some more information and videos about the new OS here...

I'm downloading the linked ISO now... (I think it is not the same that we can see on the videos.)

Ah, a netbook OS. So I was worried for nothing. I guess the handheld/mobile sphere could do with more options. Still, all this "versus windows" stuff is misleading.

Why does it show "Google Chrome OS" at the top left of you screenshot??? or is that something you added ?

I just learned that Google Chrome OS is based on the open-source Chromium OS so maybe this is another version with the same name. Did Google not copyright the Chrome OS name. Are they that stupid. Got me confused, but not really interested anyway. I won't be putting my personal files in the Cloud for Google to mess with them. Here is link to Chromium OS - The Chromium Projects

Why wouldn't a person just download Ubuntu for netbooks or some other lunix system at this point. GL

1. Photographer
2. Publishing, Graphics & Printing
3. Engineering (electrical, building, etc.)
4. CAD programs, structural designers (houses, buildings (small, large, huge, etc.))
5. Ship builders
6. Larger data based corporations
The list can go on for. . but I think the point is made. The cloud is not going to be used by companies who have to depend on large and special software to do their daily business. The cloud is not going to replace the desktop/server based corporate computer use.

That is just the given name of the virtual machine.

Google has announced that the first Chrome OS netbooks will arrive in "mid-2011" from Acer and Samsung. Originally, the company said that devices would arrive by the end of this year.

The Cr-48 is unbranded. It offers a 12.1-inch display, full-size keyboard, "oversized" touchpad, webcam, built-in 3G and Wi-Fi, and an SSD drive — Chrome OS is built to run solely on solid-state drives. Google has also done away with caps-lock and function keys.

Chrome OS is essentially the Chrome browser running atop a Linux kernel. "Chrome OS is nothing but the web," Pichai said. The browser is the only local application. All other apps must be run inside the browser.

Citrix is building a front end to run on chrome OS linked to a corporate back end server so chrome OS acts line a "dumb terminal".
